Write down a list of all the "details" in your engine bay. Hoses, wires, etc. Just describe them all.

Seriously though, Just clean the crap out of it. Soak it in simple green and wipe everything down. Grab some tireshine and shine up hoses and plastics, etc. HTH

You don't have to detail the engine bay just clean it up, by that I mean the dirt and grime.

get all the dirt and grime out of there, neaten up the wiring, put new loom on the harness. Clean up or polish the TPI, add some nice valve covers, re-paint the brackets, replace rusty grimy stuff with new parts, anything to make it look better. Try to color-coordinate things. Nothing like having yellow plug wires on a red cap with other things painted blue under the hood.

you ought to find a way to mount those solenoids neatly. Make a bracket or something

well, it depends. Is your plenum polished or does it still have the "cast" look to it?

I'm worried about messing up the paint outside the engine compartment from overspray.

Is simple Green safe on my cars exterior paint?

or what else is good stuff to use?

I've never had any problems, but then again It's really not that hard to keep it contained in the engine bay.

the are LS1 Fuel Rail Covers. My valve covers are in pretty bad shape...and just wanted to try something different. So, I cut the fual rail covers to cover the valve covers....they are alright for now...but I'll eventually install a differnent of valve covers.
