Headlight Question

I have a 91 RS and I noticed i had a headlight out... argh. Before i go and get a new lamp and change it i was wondering if there are conversions for the headlamps that will utilize the new HID bulb style which are used on most new cars these days. They are alot brighter and i really like the blueish tint they give off. i think i remember seeing something by PIAA that replaces the lamps with a house that fit the projection bulbs. But there isnt anything on the site. ANyone have any ideas or know where to find this?

For those of u who think this is kinda Rice-like.. it may be.. but our headlights dont do jack. since they are recessed and all. So i jus lookin for something a lil brighter.

Thanks

Ryan

You CAN buy them, i recall some being sold on Ebay, BUT some people bought some and it fried their wiring. Check with the electrical board and MAKE SURE you know it's not going to jack you over.

I've been looking into doing the same thing. It's true that our lights aren't very well designed. The cool part is that the lights kind of cross light paths to light up the road better, at least that's how mine are working right now. I also have 85watt amber fogs which I need to get rid of. I'm just tired of people flashing me because I have them on and they go blind. I guess I should have gone with the 55watt version, oh well. If you get any info on the replacement housings please e-mail me the info at jprevost@crosswinds.net. Thanks

the only ones i could find similar to what you are looking for are called "Composite Diamond Back Headlight Conversion Kit"
the only ones i found, I think are made by APC (american products company), and are distributed by Auto Syndicate (www.autosyndicate.com) for $50 each side
only in 4"x6", and 7"x6".
They replace regular one-piece headlights, so you can stick halogen bulbs in there instead. They have crystal clear lenses, and are designed to make use of H4 bulbs. They also have a built in city-light. I dont know if these will fit a camaro, cuz i dont remember the size of the headlights on the 'maro....
also, Dealers Sport Trucks has the whole package-
(2 headlight houses and 2- H4 bulbs) for only $99.95...their # is 1-562-936-1230
Oh yeah, I believe the wiring stuff is included with them, cuz my brother had one of those kits completely installed on his S-10 for about $150 with labor from a custom shop.

I've thought about it too.

What about the Hella conversions? You can see it on pg. 228 of the current Summit Racing catalog.

I looks right, but who knows? It accepts a standard H4 halogen bulb, but I thought about using the Xenon H4 HID bulb.

And you're right. It's touchy, borderline rice because it's popular with the import crowd, but in my book if I can light up the road and make the car safer and more visible, it's simply a functional modification worth investigating.

JPrevost: Don't ditch the lights, just tweak them downward a touch.

I guess there are more choices out there than i thot. Im just not sure about them cus i have heard horror stories about these kinda things frying the whole cars electrical.

Maybe i go with the standard headlight for now and wait till it warms up before i have to go freeze my *** off doing this crap.

Thanks for all the info. IF anyone else has anymore keep it comin. Ill let you know if i end up doin any of these. If anyone else has this conversion done please lemme know

I just put Sylvania Blue/whites (light is very white not bluish) I got at pep boyz in my firebird. They work great and are very bright. They are about 3 times brighter than my friends lights on his trans-am. Great product about 20 bucks a light.

Also I put the Hellas on my Jeep (which is for sale check out the classifieds, looking to trade it for another third gen), great product/ VERY bright (without the rice blue color) but use the bulb that comes with the lights they are definately bright enough (people sometimes flash my low beams) and from what I understand Hella uses there own bulbs with a specific mounting pattern which other standard lights don't fit.

Hope this helps

To everyone with the "blue" or "hyper-white" bulbs, check this site out. I bought the conversions with the hyper-white, or whatever, and they look awsome. But after seeing this site, I want to change back to stock.

I hope this helps everyone, whether they like the look or not.

I have the Sylvania "Cool Blue" lights as well. They are not as bright (or as cool looking) as the new bulbs, but a good upgrade over stock. I looked into the conversion kits as well, but they were very expensive and I really wasn't very pleased with the quality of the products. I would recommend the sylvania replacements, they were $15 a piece at Auto Zone. Good Luck.

I'm thinking of con***iling some KC HIGHLIGHTS to go into the fog lamp position of my camaro. those are pretty bright, but just don't get caught with them on.

then with the cool blues that I want to get, my car will be able to light up a small city or somethin'

I ended up replacing the bulb with a sylvania extra bright. I dint have the time to mess with a new kit of any kind.. ill wait around for the summer for that i guess. Anyways, i was quite surprised when i saw the spring that holds the headlight "cup" come shooting out at me. Wat a pain in the *** that was to get back in. But the light seems nice and bright. I wanted the cool blue light as a few had suggested. but of course that dumbas$ pep boys dint have em for camaros. but these are pretty good.

Thanks for the info. i really would like to do the conversion but it just sounds really iffy at this point as to how effective they are and how safe they are so i dont have to put out any fires already had to put out a fire in my 76 Monte in the passenger side floorboard
