FireBird Ram Air Induction and Exhaust

I just got my first car last chrsitmas in 2000, an 87 Pontiac FireBird Formula 305 cid TBI engine I think, brand new, also brand new tires, suspension, brakes, cd player, and dual exhaust, all for $2,500. To get to the point, I was wanting to get it repainted(white) and I wanted to get a custom Ram Air hood and Ram Air, I saw something that looked like what I wanted on the Third Gen Resource page, http://www2.theworldataclick.com/000...ads/ACF194.jpg , its the bottom one and below the pic it said it is for Firebirds from 82-92, but Im not sure so I emailed them, and there was no price listed, also I was wondering what is the prefreered Dual Exhaust system for a Firebird, Glasspacks, Flowmasters, and what sizes cause I am looking into replacing the exhaust I have. Thanks.

There's two schools of thought for "preferred" exhaust systems.

1 - Stock or quieter noise level / higher performance (Walker/Dynomax, cherry bombs)

2 - Loud and free flowing (Flowmaster, etc.)

Then there's a couple smaller groups..

3 - Stock is good (GM, NAPA, etc.)

4 - Ford is good (poke a hole in your stock muffler, or cut it off altogether)

3" pipes are a good start for a 305 and leave room for when you get tired of it and finally decide to drop in a 350.

So 3" pipes, I think Im getting some flowmasters and a flowmaster 40 muffler. What do you mean by keeping the pipes short whenever I change out the engine cause I might do that when I get the money(I know nothing about cars).Thanks.

Well it can't be a TBI as 88 was the first year. That means you probably have an LG4 aka 305 with a Q-Jet carb... Check the tech articles, there's a whole bunch of minor/free stuff you can do to make extra HP.

Your right, I just checked my VIN and my owner manual and it said that my engine is a 4 barrel-carburated engine. In what ways could I enhance it's performance and power? Im really loking into Ram Air and Ram Air hood, but I have no idea of what kind of filter holder/pan to get.

well, instead of dumping $400 on a tacky Ram Air hood, and then another $1-500 on making it functional, why not get a 83-84 L69 aircleaner from a Trans Am that utilizes the hood you already have? Its cheaper, faster, easier, and would probably work just as well. Hardest part is finding an 84 T/A in the junkyard with the aircleaner intact. I've got a Cross Fire injection cowl induction duct for sale, you might be able to make if work with some creativity. Check the classifieds if you're interested.

Thanks for the feedback, really! And thinks for the idea....but....I get warm in my pants everytime I see any kind of Firebird with Ram Air, I don't think it looks tacky, but I am willing to pay that much to make my car look good, and the Ram Air funtion right. Thanks for the feedback.

I didn't mean 3" long. I meant 3" diameter.

He's not talking physical room; he means that 3 inch exhaust will be better flowing on the larger 350 engine than the stock pipes.
