Here's a pic of my 1987 "20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition" Z28 convertible. Only 744 were produced of which almost all (~720) had the IROC-Z option. Mine does not. Of the ~24 produced, nine have been confirmed to exist today.

These cars came with only one of two drivetrain combinations:
1) 305 LG4 with automatic and
2) 305 TPI with 5-speed.
No other combinations were available for this year.

Of the nine, there are only two with the 305 TPI / 5-speed. Mine is one.

Note the unique rear spoiler light. It is a one-year only piece. Also, the side rear spoiler extensions mounted on the door. Again, this piece is also one-year only.

Only the 1987 convertible received the "20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition" designation signified by the map pocket. This is the only third generation Camaro that received a map pocket:

I wish I had a convertible to cruise in!! I once went to a motor shop when my cousin was getting tires on his mustang, and I saw an 80s Trans AM that was black and gold and a drop top!! I drooled all over myself. I even asked if it was for sale and they told me that they had been asked many times about it and the owner didn't want to sell her. Too bad. But if anyone knows of a T/A with this combo for sale, I am interested!

Pedro, to your response about my car, the
handling is just spectacular. That is the
whole reason I built the car this way...
for grand touring/canyon carving. Although
the ride is very stiff, the handling
capabilities have increased tremendously
over stock.

It's got 10,700 miles on it. It's been sitting on blocks in the back of various garages and storage facilities for most of its life. Finding this site renewed my interest enough to clean the dust off it and snap a few pictures. We're in the Muskegon area. That's a bit far from Ohio.

We also have photos of the car at ASC in Lansing, before it was converted. We had duplicate keys made when we first bought it. The originals still have the dealer's inventory stock number tags on them.

Hi Tommy, You already know that your car is awesome, so I won't help swell your head any more.

We ordered the car in March of '87. The dealer told us that the car was through Norwood and awaiting conversion. When June came and still no car, my wife and I drove over to ASC in Lansing. When we found the place we drove up to guard shack at the back parking lot. I explained to the lady guard that it was my birthday (it really was) and that we had drove over from Muskegon just to see her. Well, that got a chuckle out of her, and we told her that we were really looking for our car, which had been there going on four months. We had the VIN number from our dealer. She asked what it looked like and we told her that it looked like this black one. The first car that we walked up to in the sea Camaros was our car.

ASC was having start-up problems (I think that's why GM never advertised the '87 commemorative edition convertibles). It had a plastic rear hatch that was painted bright orange and it had orange t-tops. GM and ASC were shipping these parts back and forth. They had so many cars there that some were in the mud off of the pavement with plastic sheets instead of the plastic hatches. We could see where water was getting into some of the cars.

The guard pulled our car out of the line, took our picture with it, and drove it to the front of the line. We got it July 8th.

With the extreme popularity of the IROC at the time, you can imagine the double takes when we cruised Lake Michigan at sunset in the only third gen convertible in West Michigan. It was, and still is, a real rush.

No, we almost never show it. We haven't been to Super Chevy Sunday for three years or so. We drive out every now and then to watch the sun set.

Wow, thats a bunch of beautiful ragtops!!
Mine is an 86 (yes it IS) and was converted by Choo Choo Customs, but with the same parts that later were used for the ASC conversions.
I had planned for a while to sell it and buy a vette, but after owning it for 2.5 years I really want to keep it and give it the restoration it deserves down the line.
Chances are big that I will ship it to Norway next spring - it will for SURE be uniqe there..
It also have the pieces Willie mentioned earlier. I did not know the door pieces and the third break light in the spoiler was a only in the beginning... Thats COOL though!!

Tommy, are those the 18" chromed IROC rims you have...?? I've wanted those for I dunno how long... Very Sharp car!!

Well, I wasn't going to, but when someone showed their 86, I thought I would too. This 86 IROC was was done by ASC though, and has the short third brake light and spoiler extensions on the doors, too.

depiction of the ASC plant is vivid. I can

I also like the fact the car is a Five speed.

Hi all - a week or so I asked if anyone wanted to see my 67 convertible, since my 92 convertible is in winter hibernation 'til spring and I don't have photos. Since several were kind enough to say yes, I took a week to figure out how to do it - the result is below. The only problem is that the color somehow changed from turquoise to dark blue, so in the NEXT post I have submitted a different photo that shows the color a bit more accurately. Let me know what you think!

Here is another photo of my 67 firebird. It shows the color more correctly - the color is code "L" Mariner Turquoise. It has a matching original turquoise interior and a black top. Chicks dig it. Too bad I didn't have it when I was 17...but I had a 1975 Buick Skylark instead.

damn i want one! I found a nice looking black z28 convertable, 1991 for $6500, but i have to sell my RS first. Anyway, does it take a long time to heat them up in the winter? Thanks.

 

in the winter it is a little colder than a regular car, but not too bad. Doesn't take too terribly long to heat it up. It is worth it because of the spring and the summer. And also, think about how many thirdgens you see. Now how many of them are nice convertibles? I would say that thirdgen convertibles will turn a lot more heads than non-convertibles. Not in all cases, but most.

I saw a 1991 Z28 Convertable for sale for $6,495. The description says simply:
"convertible, CAMARO Z28, black, black,, dark grey interior, good shape, power seats, power windows, CD, new top/paint"
I dont know the mileage, but I called and left a message. Does it sound like a good deal? Looks nice in the pic, but of course I'd have to see in person.
If its a good deal, what do you think I could get for my 92 RS, black, 305 automatic, good shape (1 rip in dash, otherwise perfect interior and 3 bubbles in paint otherwise great exterior) with 64,000 Miles, all stock? Thanks.

 

If it's a 5-speed and the car is in good
condition then get it! 5speed convertible
Z-28's are hard to come by. You must look
at many things....see how the car sits...
is it the same height around all corners??
If not, could be that the frame is bent...
easy on convertibles. Check the top for
tears..and check the rear window to see if the plastic is not yellowed out. Just use
your judjgment. A clean convertible...will
go for close to $12,000- 9,000. I would have
to assume that for the price you stated, it
has about 80-100,000 miles and has some other
minor issues.
