What is the purpose of hood pins?

Honestly, I know its a dumb question. But what is the purpose of them? Are they just there for looks or do they have a purpose?

They are there to keep the hood(usually fiberglass) from coming off when the latch fails. Some are life off, so thats all they are held on by. The ones that put them on a stock car, are really doing it for looks. I know of someone that had a 3" Cowl on his 85 Z28 and installed pins because when he got at highway speeds, the hood would come up right above the headlights, so he installed the pins for added safety

Well, sometimes the latch mechanism does not work with the hood and the hoods pins hold it down. Plus you can get a tighter hold with the pins IMO.

So if you use the pins, do you also use the latch? I was thinking without the latch, somebody could just come up and open your hood whenever they wanted to and take whatever they wanted couldnt they? Or do those things somehow lock on?

They do make locking hood pins, I had them on an old GTO, kinda hard to find and I could only find chrome but they worked great.

the outer edges of your hood are starting to lift a little bit Adam, mostly from lengthy interstate (high speed) trips. Hood pins plus the factory latch would not be a bad idea
