Electro-plated plenum?

I haven't seen any of those except in one not very high quality picture. I was wondering how you'd go about goldplating your plenum and I had this crazy idea.

I have read up on the process for making your plenum look like a mirror surface, now what if you could make that one golden? You'd be set. But how?

Well thats the crazy part, I was thinking you could use one of those gold-making(electro-plating) things they show on TV-shop. You put your metal object in water with some special material and as it touches an activator plate it will turn golden(or silver).

Would that work on aluminium? I actually don't think it will work, but it is worth mentioning just so I can know for sure.

That would be pretty cool.

If you were a pimp. Leave the gold plating to teeth.

It's been done. Check the photo below. It's not mine; I believe I saved the image from an Ebay auction.

It's never too late to start a career change.

Actually I don't want goldplated plenum, I want a polished one, but the process itself was something I started thinking about.

It wouldnt be to hard if you had the right chemicals. We just did this in a chem lab. Place the plenum attached to a positive end of a DC battery/generator (I forget), attach another metal to the negative end. Place it in a solution, in this case of alminum. Turn the power on, vary the amperage and it should slowly work. Would probably take alot of work to get it shiny.

okay basically
supplys:
sulfuric acid
rit dye
pots
tub
car battery
lead plate
aluminum wires(NO COPPER)

clean your aluminum really well

fill the tube with low concentration acid, add the plate attached to the - side of the battery, place the positive side into the tub

add the aluminum parts, and wait( i forget how long look it up if you wanna try)

while waiting boil water add the dye and let it cool, and boil a pot of CLEAN water

remove the aluminum parts from the tub, place them in the dyed water, till its darker than the color you want it

remove the parts from the dye and place them in the clean boiling water( not sure how long, i forget again)

now your done-- thats a really watered down version but there ya go

I suppose if you had a black and gold paint scheme (like many third-gens do) then a gold plenum might be a cool touch.

Yes, there is a tech write-up on anodizing aluminum, How To Anodize All Your Own Aluminum Parts. It's what WckdDudeMan described in his post.

I thought that this discussion was about gold-plating aluminum. I guess His Divine Shadow really wants a polished plenum that has later been anodized a golden color.

Taken from www.goldplating.com's FAQ:

(Q) .. Why is aluminum so difficult to plate?
(A) .. Aluminum is a very reactive metal. After being polished or cleaned the surface oxidizes within seconds of coming into contact with the air. The resulting thin layer of aluminum oxide is very inert, coherent, and protective and cannot be reduced (returned to the pre-oxidized state) electrolytically. The oxide layer cannot be plated onto. One typical method used to plate onto aluminum involves removing the oxide layer using a strong alkaline solution which simultaneously replaces the oxide film with a layer of zinc (known as zincating). The zincated part can then be plated with an electroless nickel or alkaline copper solution. The part can then be plated normally. The use of the extremely caustic zincate solution and hot dip electroless nickel solution makes plating onto aluminum impractical for most portable platers using standard electroplating kits. Many larger chrome shops can economically plate a heavy coat of hot-dip decorative nickel onto aluminum. This will produce a very hard mirror bright surface that then easily be gold plated. While it is possible to plate onto aluminum using a portable system, the process is not cost effective and the durability of the resulting finish is generally not sufficient for long term service. When we have a customer that wants an aluminum part gold plated we always recommend a procedure that involves a hot-dip nickel layer.

So basically you would need to zincate, then copper- or nickel-plate, and then gold-plate the aluminum item.

just anodize it yellow youll get the same effect as the gold plate, for a fraction of the cost

done tasteful it could look great and the fact that the color is rarely used it could look really good.

a blacked out gta with gold emblems, gold two tone wheels in the right design and a few gold accents under the hood could be really nice.

however, with that being said you would have to hit the right shade, the right fit and finish to make it look good. it would be quite a project.

Get a buncha orange-ish highlighters and go crazy with them. When it comes off, do it again.
