aero spoiler
aero spoiler
Who thought of using rubber instead of firberglass!!!
Anyway mine is pretty bad and I feel like ripping it off and dumping it in the bin. I will have the car repainted soon and was wondering if the 88 Trans am (GTA) would look cool/nice if it had no spoiler.
Pictures would be nice
Also I guess it will save a ton of weight hehe. I read the high rise spoiler is not nice on a firebird, and I cant afford 400 for an aero wing!!
Any removal tips appreciated.

I think it looks ok w/o the spoiler but not great.
Remove the trim from the underside of the hatch,
Remove the bolts and wiring holding it to the hatch
I think you then push it forward about 1/2 inch and it should lift off. The clips that hold it down on the sides are fasten into slotted holes... the slot opens up larger on one end to allow it to come off. If you try to pry it up but you will probably bend the frame that surrounds the glass.

I think you should replace it with a fiberglass one from ramairhood.com. or better yet put on the 91-92 trans am spoiler. that is the best spoiler for a third gen bird imo.

If it's in bad shape, just don't throw it off. What exactly is wrong with it? I think our cars look pretty bad without the spoiler. My spoiler looked horrible before I did a little sanding and a few coats of paint.
Car looks sweet. Maybe thats only the case from a distance.
I cant afford a new one and from what I understand the camaro high rise want look good
Mine is one of the more "bad" condition spoilers. The car is gona get a paint job and it will look better if it aint there.

i dont think every bird can pull off the no wing look, its tough to do it . I say get the 91-92 spoiler , its the second best wing for a bird to have.

I opted for the 4th gen spoiler when I redid mine. Major improvement over the lousy rubber stock spoiler, and as an added bonus, it saved a ton of weight.

You guys are in luck!
I have a 4th gen style hi-rise spoiler for sale that was made to fit thirdgens (just like Jim85IROC's). It's in great condition except for a crack across the seam. (It's about the width of construction paper, and 8-10 inches long) It should be easily repairable, and would need to be painted to match your car anyway.
Like you said these sell for $400 new. I estimate repairs to be $125 or less. I'm offering it for $200 plus shipping. I'd rather sell locally (Central NJ) but if you're paying, then I'm shipping.
LMK if anyone's interested.

what do you mean by "earlier year"? is it the flat type wing? The aftermarket spoiler like this is a bolt on, but holes have to be filled and new ones drilled.

if you use the flat shelf spoiler like on the base models, you would have to fill the holes of your 3rd brake light, and the bolt holes for the aero spoiler, then drill the new ones.
as for the 4th gen t/a spoiler, it is possible to make it work but you have to add material to the center legs as they are not long enough to contact, the you would still have to drill and fill your holes. Your best bet for a 4th gen one would be to buy one of these 4th gen style made for third gen out of fiberglass. they are expensive but totally worth it.

thanks man,
I looked at the spoiler closely and I thought maybe get it sandblasted as sanding will be a pain! but I dont know if the sand blasting will do allot of harm, do you know?
I also, though if I go with an earlier firebird spoiler with a 3rd break light. Much lighter.
So, what do you guys think. Stick with no spoiler? put the orig back with no paint/withpaint? or put a clean standard firebird spoiler?

depends on what your doing with it. if drag racing i would go with the flat spoiler or aftermarket aero spoiler due to them being light. if road racing use the stock or aftermarket aero wrap around like your car came with because that style does produce a good bit of downforce which is a plus for the twisties! if your not racing and like the look of no spoiler, id so go with it, then you can have a sleeper base model look and have fun with it.
good luck
good luck
Thanks, I will have to see how it looks with out. I think the GTA wheels and the air passages on the hood and by the door will help reduce the impact of no spoiler.
One more quick question to you or anyone else out there
When the holes are exposed and I decide to seal them I thought about the compoud that they sell in hardware stores that is suppose to harden like metal and is drillable and sandabl... can i use that rather than weld ?

i would only use stuff made for body work that paint will stick to. i would weld them up and grind them smooth then use a fiberglass body filler and a glaze to finish it smooth. you can just fill the holes with fiberglass reinforced filler without welding them up, but there is a good chance that the filler will crack around the perimiter of the hole and cause the paint to crack.
good luck

Man, I think its so sexy to see a T/A without a spoiler, if I had one, that would be the first thing to remove.
thanks, very hard to decide
I guess no spiler depends on the cars condition and what is on it originally gfx or none, blackout tailight or non etc.
Here is a pic of a car like mine. I dont have access to pics of my car right now.
I also have additional inverted scoops infront of each door..... my tail lights are not blackedout or polished but they are in pretty good shape.
Is it nicer spoilerless than if it was a reg. firebird? I found a regular spoiler of an 86 firebird with brake light that I am considering if I choose to keep a spoiler on.

hi,
Could someone PLEASE tell me if a reg. spoiler with brake light from a firebird will bolt in on the location of an aero wing?
How many holes do I have to seal up?
Need to know ASAP to fix it on the weekend before mondays paint job.
Please help
Thanks
