PAINT IDEAS
I am thinking of repainting my 1989 Iroc, I just need some opinions on how this would look: I am thinking of spraying the whole car silver and then getting some transparent candy apple red to spray over the silver, that way when the sunlight hits the car, you will be able to see the silver but it will still be red?? any suggestions? and I would like to do this myself, I never painted a car (except model cars and trucks) what would I need paint wise? thinner, hardener, clear??? My car is currently the darker red for 1989 Irocs, can anyone do a photoshop on this kind of a paint job? about how much should I expect to pay??
any help would be great

i think that sounds pretty cool...now you wont actually see a ton of silver unless you use like flakes or pearl...from what i understand candys are semi transparent but its not like its gonna really kameleon into silver with direct light...youll just see hints of it under the paint
its still a great idea none the less...just get what you want pictured in your head and go for it
im in the process of getting mine done right now...i just took it to have metal welded into the side light spaces both front and rear and have the door handles/locks shaved to clean the lines up on the cars body. Finally, after about 4 months of HAND sanding the car down to 400 grit smoothness...still more to go but i should have it done by end of the month as long as everything goes to plan
good luck man

hey, coming from experience in painting cars (just got done restoring an '89 IROC with my dad a few weeks ago), i wouldn't attempt to paint that sort of color/paint on the car yourself without prior experience. candy paint is a pain in the **** if you dont know what you're doing...just my $0.02

i'm pretty sure thats how all candy paintjobs are done so it won't really be anything different. it would look good if you did it right but it's hard as hell to make it look right, if you haven't painted much it probably won't turn out as good as it could

paint and supplies alone will cost you upwards of a grand...i just spent a little over a grand for primer, base, and topcoat...my topcoat was $740 for a gallon...but hey if you want something nice shell out the cash
if you want to do it yourself...you sound just like me...im doing EVERY bit of what i can do myself...prepping..sanding...im even going to ask my body guy to teach me to spray the primer and do that as well...then ill sand the primer...pay him to spray the paint so i dont screw it up and ill sand inbtw coats...basically all im paying him to do is some of the body work i cant (welding) and laying the paint (no skills yet and not worth screwing it up learning)...so ive basically painted my car myself minus 2 steps and saved myself probably about 9 grand in labor...if i was to pay someone to hand sand it for me but if you want a show room paint job go all out

This is mine with a gold basecoat....you can see that when the sun hits certain 'hotspots' (at certain angles in direct sunlight) - it will show some gold. Having a gold basecoat can sometimes make my car appear orange, but not pink. Silver I've heard can turn it somewhat pinkish.
Check out Kandied91z's ride, as he painted his with a silver base (though I think he also mixed some light blue somewhere in there).
If you dont have prior experience with car painting - I dont think you'd be too happy with the outcome of a tri-stage candy job by yourself. Alot of professional painters still screw it up....mine turned out good, after the wetsanding and buffing, but still isnt flawless, and it cost me around 6500 dollars. (Ive seen candy jobs go as high as 15k, but you're talking trailer queen perfection there)
