This sucks.. Kinda..

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/8...25large6ew.jpg

Turns out my new engine sits way too high for a stock hood.. and I dont have the money to drop on a cowl *YET*..

What do you people think of me just cutting a hole in my hood.. I mean I DO plan on getting a cowl, but I need to save up a little bit of cash before that and I need a working temporary solution.

I think its a cool look when the air filters sticking out of the hood, gives it that intimidating look when ricers pull up next to me, makes them think twice.

I have that hood with the indents.. I think that would look weird to have a hole in it but Im stuck in between a rock and a hard place at the moment.

So what are your opinions?

*edit*:
The car is dirty as hell because its been in my garage the whole winter, and ive been working on it.

I would be getting a new air filter/assembly so thats only a temporary look.. dont think I would be driving around with THAT sticking out of my hood.

First time I've ever seen a jackstand IN the engine compartment!!
From the looks of it, you'll need about an 8" cowl! Start saving.

If you have a second car and a garage just roll without a hood. Besides, someone will pay 50.00 for a hood. Use that money for the "cowl fund".

What if I buy one of those cowl pieces, Ill just attach it with rivets or something. My only concern with that would be having to shape the cowl piece to fit those indents on my hood.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

What would you guys think of that? Saves me from having to spend more money on a cowl. Anyone know hard are the butterflys are to hook up?

My car isnt supercharged, but maybe I could just buy one of those noisy gear timing drive things.

My car should be pretty quick when I get her running.. a lot faster than my old engine and my old engine would push me past lightnings. So its not like its all show and no go.

Or even save up some more money and get this:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
That would look sweet too

I don't think that's a filter on top of his motor, it looks like a big rusty gear, take another look.

i have fit a performer RPM intake, holley 750 double pumper, and a 14x3 drop base air cleaner under a factory camaro hood, i don't think something adds up with your combo if you're running the same intake.

Why is the engine sitting so high?
Is it because the engine mounts are not set up properly, or is it just an newer intake is taller than normal?

It has the adapter plate because of the carb.. you have a holley which I dont think is spreadbore, so you dont need the plate. That air filter is squished, thats the only way it will fit under the hood like that, plus its pushing against the hood so when I rev it I might screw something up.

If I get a holley then ill be set because of the adapter plate adding heigth, I know someone who will sell me a holley double pumper 750cfm for 150 dollars. I dont know what condition its in though, i havent seen it yet.

Im broke at the moment, my block is in the car now *got the engine in febuary* New camshaft/intake manifold/lifters/timing chain/tv cable. The heads arent even on right now. Im waiting till friday to get paid so I can buy transmission fluid. This weekend is when im getting down and dirty to get it running so I can break in the cam. I need two new front tires, registration, and insurance. I have a cell phone too so my money is pretty locked down right now and it sucks. Im just thinking ahead and wondering how I should budget my money. Im just worried about the hood clearance and how I should spend my money to fix that problem.

Once I get my car running, Im getting my ged and going to school to get mcse certified, among other certificates. Once I do that, it will land me some awesome jobs and then ill be able to dump as much cash as I want into my camaro, which would be friggen sweet.

take all that crap off the top of the carb, and see if if the hood will close. If so you can probably find a drop base air cleaner that will work with your setup.

dont do it , it always looks ****ty and half assed . I laugh when i see people have it done , run it without a hood or go to the junkyard and get a flat hood for cheap and put a bolt on cowl on it and do that cheap , but dont cut a hole in the hood, also what about a shorter air cleaner

If this isn't your daily driver, I would recommend just waiting to save up for a cowl hood. Instead of going through the trouble of cutting up the factory one just to replace it later. Just wait.

I was using a Edelbrock midrise intake and a 1 inch spacer to run my holley 750, the carb alone was sitting above the fender lines 2-3"s. I had to buy a cowl, so I just bought a fiberglass 4" cowl and glued it with industrial glue to a fiberglass 82 hood. It looked good after the body work was done. I actually sold the hood later for 400 bux when i changed over to fuel injection.

so anyways his motor is sitting in the right area for the setup I see in the pics. I bought the glass cowl for 80 bux and the hood for 40 and I think the glues was like 50, its the glue that body shops use now to glue on rear fenders instead of welding. It was called Duramix 50/50 worked great

my vote is for rollin with no hood until you get a cowl. as long as it's not a daily driver you don't leave it for too long right? i did this with my six inbetween hoods for a few dasy without issue. of course, there is not many things worht stealing under the hood of a v6 firebird  . i would keep it garaged until you get a cowl.

also the hood you have is a ram air "z28" hood. it has (or had) those flapes in the back that opened up right? if not it might be a louver hood (with the fin things) that has had the louvers removed.

if it is the hood in the picture below that is the "ram air" kind. they are sorta neat. also please ignore the horable mess that car is in. we stripped it out before sending it to the crusher. the hood is now on an 85z-28.

ive had to roll with no hood before, its not too bad. just make sure if you DO drive around without a hood that you dont park anywhere for an extended period of time. IE see a movie, becuse someone WILL mess with your wires or battery or something else. its just bad news bears.
