I just found a good method to strip wheels. I have been thru 1 can of aerosol and one regular can of aircraft stripier trying to strip this one wheel, and all that happened was the clear cote came off and the paint discolored.

To get the paint off all I had to do was sand the whole wheel with 320 grit sand paper for about 1/2 an hour. Then get a can of regular air craft stripier and brush on a light cote. After that I pored the rest of the can on the wheel and waited 20 minutes. Then I sprayed off the aircraft stripper with the my pressure washer turned off (so the bulk of the stripier wouldn't fly everywhere) that got most of the paint off. to get the rest of the paint off I moved the wheel outside, turned on the pressure washer, and sprayed the wheel till the rest of the paint came off.

me too im just worried about getting the stripper on my tires

 

i didn't have any tires on my wheels when i did it so i have no idea if it will harm the tires.

so what is the clearcoat for on the factory aluminum wheels.... are there any adverse affects from removing the clearcoat and polising the wheels?

 

I never figured out the clearcoat on the wheels thing. I stripped the wheels on a '92 Lumina Z34 in '95 and they still look great.

Some wheel cleaners will eat the clearcoat and make it look crappy, but stripped wheels clean up with the harshest stuff and polish beautifully with some Mother's Mag & Alum. Polish.

 

You can strip and polish your wheels up and then recoat them with some clear from POR15 called Glissen PC. It will keep your glossy shine for years.
