painted rims
I have a 91 RS, and the rims were in pretty bad shape and i saw that duplicolor made a wheel coating. I like the look of the gunmetal rims and they had a graphite color, so i stripped the clear coat off the rims and used a very fine steel wool brush to smooth out the surface, put 2 coats of primer and 4 coats of the paint followed by 3 coats of clear. This whole project took me about 8 hours over 2 days. This saved me alot of money since now i dont have to buy new rims while at the same time keeping the stock look. Let me know what you guys think.

I like it, but I think that if it were me I would have left the lips on the wheels silver, or attempted to polish them. They still look very cool, but I guess I am partial to polished lips.

they still look good though, I bought a can of that duplicolor like 2 years ago but I never got around to painting my rims

That looks really good. I'd also like to see a picture of the entire car.
I was also wondering if you could get me a picture of the wheel straight on that shows all the sides of the center cap. I've been trying to find a picture like that so I can use it as a texture for a 3D model, but have had no luck.

i thought about that too except slightly different my only worry was the fact that it's bobble paint on a rim...... My rims take a beating as i live in the country and they get gravel throw up at them at uch so i'm not sure sure about the durability factor, i was planning on having them powder coated the same color and putting black inlays on them.
Maybe i'll try painting them instead

well here it is 5 months later after painting my rims and they are holding up great, i just got new tires on them and had them put the weights on the inside of the rim so you wouldnt see the weights, what a great idea. no nicks or chips even from the tire guy. and the car gets cleaned once a week. i have had alot of compliments on them

btw, u did a really nice job on them, I was just wondering, bc I had my wheels off the past week and wet sanded and polished each one individually (proabably around 3hrs each rim) and I'm getting ready to paint them, I'm just not sure about the best way to go about doing them, and since you did a real nice job on yours, I'd figure id ask.
Thanks

I like the graphite color. I have a set of 00-02 SS wheels that i bought from a guy that were done with the graphite color. This is what they looked like on his car.

i stripped them first with aircraft remover(note to self, dont get this on you, burns really bad), used some fine wool pads to smooth them out and get any left over clear coat that wanted to be stubborn, taped off the tires where only the rim was exposed and used 2 coats grey rattle can automotive primer, and then 4 coats of the paint and then 4 coats of the clear coat they make for this. I did not sand any inbetween the coats. I know some of you dont like it but this is a temporary, well maybe a year or two, till i find some rims i really want. this is a work in progress and for now im doing the interior work first. As far as the bra, it looks like crap underneath the bra, so this covers it up. my plan is to make this car near show quality, but will take some time to do so. next on agenda is new carpet and seats.

I did it on my gta with coss lace wheels and i didnt like the way they looked with my car being gun metal gray i thought it would look good but it just looks like alot of brake dust i think it looks better on a black car than a gray one i will paint them black next time i have a weekend off.I think if you polished the lip and groves on each spoke it would look even better but all in all it looks good

Right on. I used to have a NC State Trooper as a next-door neighbor ... and the chief of police AND the city manager all live in my neighborhood. We're the first to get snow/limbs/trash picked up because of the city manager AND nobody dares mess with our stuff because of the cops.
Anyway ... I was just wondering about all the cars ... back to the thirdgen stuff now ... didn't mean to hijack this thread.
