old clear coat on 88-90 iroc wheels?

I have a set of iroc wheels that i'm going to be putting on But the clear coat is starting to peel and there starting to show there age Is there a way to get rid of the clear coat on just the non painted parts of the wheel or do I have to strip the whole thing? The painted part is still fine back in the old days we would just take 600 sandpaper wet sand them and put never dull on them
But don't know much about this clear coat except it is a protector

The painted areas were in good shape on mine as well so i left them.

Take some 120/180 grit and sand them til the clear is gone from the machined parts. Then wetsand up the grits till your happy with the finish of the machined parts. If you dont want a polished look 400 wet has a nice satin finish. Then hit the cleared areas with some 2000 grit to smooth the finish. Buff with your favorite products to a nice shine.

Tape the line where the painted areas meets the machined part. so the 120 and coarser grits dont scratch the clear.
