Painting black, but not gloss

I'm not familiar with painting much at all, so I don't know the whole process of getting it done.

What I'm wanting to do is make my car sort of flat black.. A buddy of mine did it on his truck and it looked terrible. But then I've seen some cars that look great with it. Is it all in the process? An example of what I want is this: http://www.vfnfiberglass.com/annetepromodcamaro2.JPG

I don't really want it to be glossy at all. What paint should I use to get it done? Should I just leave off the gloss coats or what? Links to useful threads would be just as appreciated as posts; just wasn't sure what to search for without spending days looking through all the painting threads.

Personally I don't like flat black, it just looks unfinished.

Anyway, what you want to do (to do it right at least) will cost as much as a regular paint job. I don't remember the company but they sell the stuff to do it right, where there will be a clear coat and all that so the paint will last. You might search Google for that or someone else here might know.

I'm going for the look of the old alcohol runners we had back in the day. Primer gray or flat black. I think I could pull it off pretty well. If not, I could always toss on a couple coats of clear to gloss it up a bit.

I understand. I should have explained a little more, I only stopped because you weren't asking for opinions. When I say they look unfinished, that mostly comes into play when you've got a car with the potential to be a show car. The interior is mint, the body work is perfect, nice wheel/tire combo, clean engine and engine bay and then you throw flat black on it. YUCK! It just ruins it IMO. If you're going for the old rum runner look, then I imagine its not going to be a perfect car like that. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying it has to be trashed to have that look. Flat black just isn't my cup of tea so to speak, I'd never paint a car that color no matter what look I was going for. Like I said though, its your car and your decision and it really doesn't matter what I think!

Don't just primer it, even if you don't want to spring for the complete paint job kit I mentioned above. It needs to be sealed too or its not going to last.

Yeah, the paintjob is going to be long term, so it needs to be done right. It'll probably be several months before I can do it, so I'm starting my homework now so I dont' screw it up later.

Wow, that does look great! What all did you do to get it to look that way? Anyone have any ideas what can protect against it fading majorly like that?

you can paint the car flat with no problems but you cannot just paint it with like black primer and leave it like that. you need to have it done by someone who knows what they are doing. you can still do a bascoat, topcoat, clearcoat method just with a flat clearcoat not a gloss one. if done right it will last like any other regular paint job

here is a set done in the red with the 30 flat, they also just came out with urathane flat clear ready to mix n shoot if you want to go over a custom color. you can get a flattening agent to make the dull look but its a pita to mix just right.

Hey Psyco, I really dont see any fading on your car. I know that last pic is it while being sanded, so what are you talking about?

My car is flat black right now, but it was mainly done out of nessecity... when I got my car, it had had damage fixxed with panels off different cars, so it was 7 different colors. 8 cans of Krylon Flat black later it was all one color. It has the normal rattle can streaks, but all n all it aint to bad. I actually think when I paint my car next spring, Ill get her done flat black.

loved the look, but wasn't big on the blochiness from the rattle can bomb...

You might like Jon Deere Blitz Black paint. Quite a popular paint for hot rodders and it stands up to the elements.

Heres some info with links to paintjobs.
John Deere Blitz Black paint - Crankshaft Coalition Wiki

Honda also has a motorcycle paint called asphalt I think, has an optional clear coat kit. More expensive than the john deere tractor paint though.

I love the flat job on this car. I bugged the dude about it and he said it was some two stage black PPG paint that he never finished. He just sprayed the color coat, no clear.

Its is mute but still has a shiene to it. Just to sweet.
