so i was thinking of powder coating the intake manifold, runners and plenum (colour not important at this time) but was curious if i needed to polish it to make the powder coating work or look nice. i know i need to file off sharp edges, but should i also polish that cast to look like CNC finish?

maybe post some pics so i can do some comparisons.

My buddy has the Eastwood home powdercoating kit and I did my Miniram in blue and my fuel rails mirror black. (my car is blue and black)

 

i really like the textured look of the powdercoating on the cast aluminum. i think im gonna deburr my intake and when i get my runners and plenum, ill have it all powder coated. i just bought a TPIS big mouth intake, it looks pretty good, but there are a lot of redundant things on it, i may just weld up the holes for a more stock look instead of having to look at it and think "what bolts up there???"

 

Dude polish them TPIS pads like I do all the MR I cost. and the fuel rails. It will look 100X better.

Hey Chris, I love those centerbolt Firebird-logo (tall?) valve covers! The bird looks embossed, which makes me wonder if they're available to purchase from someone somewhere? Or is that a one-of-a-kind custom job? Those are awesome! Where can I get some?

 

i dont have a miniram, i have a bigmouth intake. im planning on leaving the cast look on there, i think itll give the texture im looking for (not into polished stuff on my camaro). im deffinately going to clean it up though, its got some cast flaws that ill just buff and sandblast out to make look like stock, and ill get rid of that ugly "TPIS" logo too, i think itll look awesome with the base and plenum one colour, and the runners another colour.

 

can you post that pic? or give me the name of the file... there are too many to look through! I've been looking for valvecovers like you're describing though

Im not sure where he got em. All I did was powder coat the bird red on the valve covers. and coat the rest of everything.

Id bet summitracing would have em.

Yea, but it dosent have the quaility of a professional powdercoated job. Ive noticed it will chip fairly easy. 6 months after installing the intake on my car the upper plenium ridges started getting tiny little bubbles in it. Started to look like a$$, so I took the intake back off and stripped off the blue powdercoat. The rails are holding up nicely and are still black.

My buddy has a oven and some IR heat lamps for curing the powder, but it seems like no matter what we do, prep work, curing temps, curing times, ect... we just cant get the quaility we want.

those valve covers are absolutely awesome, exactly what i've been looking for! it's the 3rd gen version of the bird and everything. please ask where he got those from

 

here is mine, although not fuel injected like all the others but, weaind stealth air strike done in aluminum then an epoxy clear, with the harbor freight kit.

IR lights dont get a good cure on the parts. and EASTWOOD powder isnt the best to use.

make sure the INTAKE is at 350-450* (depends on powder) not just the oven air.

once the PART gets to that temp start your cure cycle. (15-30min) again depends on powder. and you shouldnt have any problems. I use a NORDSON SURECOAT gun which cost around 5k new $2500 used. and I have a eastwood gun as a back up or small job gun. They both do GREAT jobs if everything else is done for prep.cured right.
