i'm debating that i paint my 92 camaro sometime this summer.
i want to rent the equipment and buy the paint, it would have to be done in my garage. i have no experiance with painting other than car models. i have done some body paint and repair that isnt noticible. i wouldnt want some guy throwing paint on it from some company, id trust yself more. i just didnt know how hard it would be to do, the paint is wearing through to the primer and the glosscoat is mostly gone on the hood, behind the t tops and the doors

 

why would you not trust someone who paints cars for a living to do the work, but you would trust yourself who self admittedly doesnt really have a clue what hes doing.

I'm all for doing things for yourself, but if youre going to do this make friends with someone who actually knows what theyre doing, and have them come give you a hand.

 

yeah good point. i also have no cash to pay for someone to paint it, there's no place for me to take it other than maaco which i heard is terrible. also the paint is mostly sh it so i figured why not learn it on this car as opposed to a nice car.

my dad's friend has painted his car and did a great job on it, that's where i got the inspiration

 

I want to try on mine as well. Simply because I'd love to know how to do it.......

 

personally ive never painted a car, but i do know that how a paint job looks comes 98% down to the prep work that you do, the sanding, prepping, masking.

People go to maco and spend 700 bucks on a paint job and wonder why it looks like ****. Its pretty simple the amount of hours they have to spend on your car to do a proper paint job, they have to charge around 2500-3000 or theyre definitly skipping steps.

remember the guy at maco is just a hand spraying paint out of a gun, so its not maaco in its self thats ****, just time spent on it.

If you can get your dads buddy to come and give you some pointers in exchange for beer or something (that usually seems to work) then go for it.

 

I say go for it. You can buy paint guns for a reasonable price assuming you already have an air compressor. I've never painted a car but I plan to in the future. Do some research online or buy a book and you should be set.

Plus, if you buy all the stuff you can always paint it again !

Just like 19doug90 said its all in the prepwork the spraying is easy its what your spraying onto that you need to be concerned about, just do your research, get help and don't be afraid to ask questions, and get your sanding arm in good shape your gonna need it, and keep any and all oil based products 100 miles away from your car, paint and petroleum don't mix at all, good luck

yea take it from somone that has painted his own car, twice. (not an f body thou) make the body work and the prep work flawless. anything that can be seen by eye of felt by hand will be magnified after you spray it with paint, especially darker colours.

buy or rent everything you'll need, and don't forget to use a moisture trap before your paint gun.

spraying the paint is the easiest part!
