Engine block color?
Getting ready to start assembly of my new 5.7 and trying to decide what color to go with on the block. I would like to see a few different pics of members rides under the hood. My TPI setup is polished and I am gonna have the chrome valve covers, timing cover and possibly the pulleys too. Thinking of painting the heads with the silver Alumablast from eastwood.

Re: Engine block color?
Dark Gray.
Alumablast won't set off the chrome very well.
Blue... maybe if its dark enough. GM & Chev. blue
might work, but are very common.
Pink would require some very large fuzzy dice off the
mirror, tassels in front of the 'visors, and a
Freddie Prinze bobble head in the rear window.

Silver.
Sure black looks real good, but I myself decided to paint my replacement engine, silver. If you have a leak, you'll see what it is, right away, you'll be able to tell, oh yeah oil or anti-freeze or .. just overspray armor-all.

MY MOTOR IS CANDY APPLE RED AND MY PULLEYS ARE GUN METAL AND ALL BRACKETS ARE BLACK MY TPI AND LT1 INTAKE R BOTH POLISHED. I SAY GO WITH BLACK CHERRY OR SOMETHING DIFFERENT THEN BLACK,RED ,BLUE. I WAS THINKING OF POWDER COATING MY INTAKE. WHAT COLOR IS UR CAR?
Re: Engine block color?
What's the colour of your car? Is it the same car that's in your sig?
If it is, my first choice would be black with clear over it to make it shine, yet it wouldn't be too outlandish - not too bling bling if you know what I mean.

Re: Engine block color?
Thanks for all the input guys. Anyone got any underhood pics. The car is Metallic Flame Red and is the car in my signature.
Not a chance in he!! that my block gonna be pink. Would be cool to smoke someone with a pink pig under the hood, but not my style. I kinda like the black cherry idea, but also like my Poncho blue. I've built three of those 400big blocks

91 camaro.. maybe it's just me, but the link doesn't
get down to anything specific.
Unholy.. any dark color that co-ordinates w/ the car
color and highlights the chrome components will be
very efffective. Any "pink" variant is like "a boy named
Sue" -- only works once.

Re: Engine block color?
orange, or flame red.
Silver looks good.
Black will hide your inevitable leaks, PITA.
Paint it with the freeze plugs out. They look stupid the same color. The contrast pops nicely. My block is orange, heads are silver, then some chrome above it.

This is the first rebuild - painted freeze plugs
I had to replace them after, so they are no longer painted.

I would say paint it the stock colour. I am not even sure what the stock colour is personally. Isn't there some heat transfer advantage if you paint it black or some other dark colour. I know chrome is bad for keeping heat in motors especially Chrome Oil pans because it keeps heat in the oil. Of course this could easly be an old wife's tail. If it isn't how much heat could it really transfer off.

Re: Engine block color?
My block I'm using for my current build is currently black, but I'm thinking about going through the trouble of painting it red like my car. I've got black heads for it, so I figure a red block, black heads, and some chrome valve covers would look pretty cool, but I dont know. Never seen many red blocks for some reason?

Re: Engine block color?
I always look through the Summit catalogue and dream about owning one of the GM Performance Parts crate motors, and looking at the 572 pic they have in the catalogue just makes the motor look deadly powerful. It's a bright red block with aluminum heads and bright red valve covers, aluminum intake manifold, black oil pan and aluminum water pump. I know it's a big block, but why not try to make a small block resemble a big block, I mean you could tell them it's a big block, after you beat them you could turn around and tell them it's a small block. I'm pretty sure Jegs sells the valve covers for small blocks , too...

edit: I forgot you have a Pontiac, maybe find some valve covers that have "Pontiac" or "Firebird" engraved, or find some you like and powdercoat them the same color as the block...

Re: Engine block color?
My block and heads are grabber green with bolt ons purple and chrome, got sick of seeing chevy orange on every chevy at the local cruises. Will try to get a pic up soon.
----------
Here is a pic of it from two years ago, there have been a few changes made since then, but still the same colors.

Personally I always like the Chevy orange on a Camaro or the Pontiac blue for the Firebirds. Or the plain stock black. I never really got into the color of the motor. As long as it looked good. But I have always liked a white or yellow motor. But you would need to keep it really clean. I think for your car though. A nice red or black would look good. You just don't really want the color of your motor to clash with the color of your car. Like a green motor with a red engine bay. Adam :-)

Re: Engine block color?
I just painted the top end o the IROC with Duplicolor red Metalcast paint. The Formula I painted the block black with Metalcast gray on the valve covers and TPI and all the brackets are painted aluminum color.

Re: Engine block color?
Im into dark colors....soo, I like the GUNMETAL above.....the Metalcast Red, and also the BLAWK....<~~~Black said funny.
I want mine to be Either RED like the metalcast or Dark Charcoal with Red outlines in the bolt hole and freeze caps...to set off the Charcoal. Then I am getting my fuel and brake lines painted also....mine as well if Im painting everything else.
Oh and good luck on choosing. Surely you'll be happy with whatever you choose.

Re: Engine block color?
I wouldnt use the Metalcast on the block or heads. It can handle some heat but its not rated high enough to be used on those parts. It does ok on the valve covers but the red on my IROC is discoloring a little bit.
