Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
ok so i have a 87 iroc...custom paint engine well everything...cept for my headlight's...stock..blah...yellow...blah...gay...anyway
i have two audi tt hid balasts and bulbs that i will wire in to my headlights, and i was wondering do i need to run any kind of relay or thicker wire since i was just going to splice them into the original wiring harness or do i have to do anything special...
and second since they are hid bulbs they have a differ end on them then a regular bulb so i was wondering if they make ligths for our cars that accept oem hid bulbs or am i gonna have to make sumthing for it...i dont mind making it custom but if i can just swap the light taht be easy...thanx for your help.

With the higher draw of HID lights, I would run new power supply wires to them. Better to do it once, than have to fix burnt wiring/over loaded circuits, an then STILL hafta run new power wires for a supply.

Re: Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
I've seen conversions kits that run with stock wiring due to the HID's actually using less power than Halogen while running (35 to 40 watts @ 6amps for the HID vs 55 watts @ 10amps for Halogens), but need a large amount to initiate the arc (provided by a capacitor). The ballasts (usually one per bulb) you have will convert your car's 12VDC into the higher voltage AC needed to ignite the arc and run the bulbs.
Again, this is for aftermarket conversion kits, of which practically all state, "The HID system will draw less power from the vehicle's electrical system".
However, this is not an aftermarket conversion kit, it's an OEM kit from an Audi. Plus in addition to the ballasts & bulbs a relay is usually needed as well. And how the bulb would mount in the 3rd gen lens is a good question. Perhaps somebody here has done this or knows of a way to convert it. Also, aiming the new bulbs will be incredibly important. No sense in aiming 3 times the light where you don't need it or at other drivers.

Re: Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
i have a aftermarcket HID system on all four lights (high and low) and as Iroctopless stated u dont need a relay for this, the HID bulbs it self are 35watts compared to your hlaogen that draws at LEAST 55 watts, the only problem is turnig them on, if my car is off and i turn on my headlights only one will usuaually come on ,because it needs at least 12+ volts to work(create the arc), and thats also the point of the higest current draw which i beleive to be about 20 to 25 amps tops, i have been running my HIDs for a few months now with no problems and have a few frinds (stang and lude that are also doing so on there stock wiring systems with no proble) aiming theses lights is the biggest challenge

Re: Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
What bulbs do you have? YOu also need a housing designed for the HIDs, chances are you will need to get the projector lens from the Audi or another car with projectors, and then make a housing with a clear plexy. The reflectors in our cars headlights won't work, as it will scatter the light really badly, you also don't want the flutted glass, as that also scatters light.
You will also need to make sure you have the cut-off sheild that goes with the HID projector, or reflector housing, otherwise you will blind oncoming traffic, and get TONS off attention from cops.
You get a plastic e-bay 4x6 H4 style housing, and cut the back off, and then build something to hold a projector housing for the HID's. If you have a reflector style HID bulb, I would guess you are pretty much SOL at doing it the right way, unless you have the original reflector.

Re: Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
Here is a good articles with some helpful advice . . .
http://www.gohid.com/information.php
http://www.aa1car.com/library/hid_headlamps.htm
I'd also be afraid of making any custom reflector or anything to hold the bulb due to the bulb's high temperature. They get darn hot (as high as 1500degF inside) and could melt it or cause a fire hazard.

If you have a D1S bulb, then buy projector housing for it, then figure out how to fit those projectors into whatever plastic housing you have.

Re: Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
What are the HIDs that fit stock wiring, with no ballasts? They seem to just be a housing, with a replaceable bulb. Any good? Anybody actually use them, and give real world feedback, not "I think those are stupid."?

Re: Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
I mounted 2 of the ballasts in front of the battery, and 2 of them in front of the canister on the drivers side.
I have never seen them, unless you are talking about the bulbs that are sold as "HID Look". But I do know that true HIDs need a ballast and a starter, which, (the starters) are housed inside the ballasts.

I guess they qualify more as HID look. How good are they, for lighting? Weak?

Re: Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
Well, at first, I just had the "E" code housings with plain jane Hella Bulbs. They were a great improvement over the stock type sealed beams. I was fairly impressed, probably would be even better with Siverstars or Piaa bulbs. I dislike the blueish tint that the typical "HID look" bulb produces. But they can't even compare to the true HIDs.

Re: Need help with some custom headlight question HID's Custom
u have to switch the prongs around on the original connector, so as if u were using an h4 bulb, i had the diagram but cant find it, if u search for an h4 conversion it will be in one of the posts.
