Hey guys, Is there an easy way to remove window tinting? My back window has been pealing like man, and the tint on my driver and pass. windows has also been pealing. Is there a chemical that will soften it up so I can scrape it off?

Re: Removing window tint?

Get yourself and nice razor blade, some 00 fine steel wool, and a bottle of amonia and get ready for a few days of cussing. Peel the tint off and then take the amonia to the adhesive. You can use the razor blade on the side glass but you'll need to use only the steel wool on the hatch if you want any hopes of keeping the defroster.

It took me about 3 days to get all the old tint of my glass and get every bit of the adhesive off so I could get new tint put on. It was a pain in the ***, but well worth it in the end.

Make sure to use a stainless razor blade so you dont scratch the glass.

This sounds like fun.. I'll have to wait until it warms up I imagine, read some things on the net that said it's easier when you let it sit in the sun.

Re: Removing window tint?

if your tint is BAKED on the window simply do this:

1. Saturate the window with amonia.

2. next place a "kitchen type" garbage bag over the window with LOTS of amonia between the window and the bag.

3. press down on the bag so that the amonia stays on the window.

4. take a blow dryer an heat up the dry side of the garbage bag. get it really hot! this is known as "sweating the tint".

5. let the tint cool down and soak for 30 to 40 min....

then peel huge chunks!
----------
like the previous post says...you will need a razor and steel wool.......i used steel wool on all of the windows and it looked like SHOW room quality glass when finished!

Re: Removing window tint?

Hey Kev, do you have the rear defrost option on your back glass???? If so, you DO NOT want to use a razor blade. The blade will damage the grid lines for the rear defrost. There are a few different chemicals that you can use to soften up the adhesive once the film is removed. To clean the glass to remove all adhesive once it has been softened up, use a plastic scouring pad thats not abrasive. EG....things like steel wool, 3M scotchbrite pads.

Or better yet call a tinter and ask em how much extra to remove the old tint if you are having the window redone. Often its not much extra if they are tinting the glass for you already.

As for the door glasses, yeah go nuts with a razor blade to remove adhesive. I always just use a foaming type glass cleaner that adheres to the surface (GM glass cleaner is a good example) Once the film is removed, spray glas cleaner and commence scraping with a razor blade. Don't be afraid to use a couple of blades per window, it keeps the job going smoother with a sharp blade.

Re: Removing window tint?

ever try lacquer thinner? dowse a rag real good with it,wipe the entire tinted side down, wait a few secs. wipe the tinted side again, then just peel the tint off in one piece.
For the glue thats left afterwards use the l/t again.

Lacquer thinner works, but amonia works better.

Re: Removing window tint?

Make sure you cover your panels or take them off before you do anything.
Just work at it slow & let the whloe thing dry out thoroughly, if your using ammonia you don't want that smell soaked in your panels.

Re: Removing window tint?

I AGREE 100% WITH 1991ON20'S THAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO REMOVE THE TINT...THAT IS HOW WE DO IT AT THE SHOP ALL THE TIME.
**ANOTHER TIP**
-START ON ONE SIDE, AFTER THE GARBAGE BAG HAS SAT FOR AT LEAST 1/2 HR IN THE SUN....RIP THE FILM OFF AND SATURATE THE WINDOW WITH AMMONIA THEN LEAVE IT ALONE AND GO TO THE NEXT SIDE.
-*******LEAVE THE BACK HATCH ALONE FOR ATLEAST A FULL HOUR IN THE SUN AFTER YOU REMOVE THE BAG *DO NOT* WASTE ANY TIME AND HIT THE OUTER EDGES OF THE WINOW FIRST(THAT DRIES FIRST AND THEN THE GLUE RE-HARDENS) WITH STEEL WOOL

GOOD LUCK AND NO NO NO RAZOR BLADES ON THE REAR GLASS
