F-body Discontinued? Maybe not.

I recently read in a Road and Track magazine that Gm said that they dicontinueing production of the Camaros and Firebirds in the plant just in Quebec. Well I talked to the son of an owner of a Pontiac/Buick/GMC dealership, and he let me in on Gm's plans. The Firebird is GONE, but the sports car gap in Pontiacs line will be filled be the new Fiero. As for the Camaro it is taking a leave of absense (to build interest) but the new one will be presented in 2005, 3 years after they get cut. Odd tactics, we will se if they work. Anyone know anything else?

All I know is don't believe things you may hear from someone involved with a dealership. They get no more knowledge on what goes on than the public generally does. My mom is a manager for a Pontiac/GMC dealership and I've even spoke to the Pontiac midwestern rep in person and they don't know much yet. All rumour and speculation.

their have been a lot more camaro's in my area

strange

i did hear something similar to them building the fiero again though

and i did hear that the camaro will come back front-wheel drive

.......get the point???

Let me just point out that GM has thought up many crazy ideas, did any of them happen? Not for the most part. It wouldn't be a f-body if it was front wheel drive, and GM knows that.

Exactly my point...it wouldnt be an F-body if it was front wheel drive...and it would turn die-hard F-body and other enthusiasts like us totally off to the production line. I hope GM has brains this time, and doesnt do something stupid like that...like they are doing with the 4th gen's....they finally got it right(at least with the Ram Air TA..dont like the Maro as much), and they have to get rid of it. Totally ridiculous. But hey, i guess we'll all just have to see...

IF, and that is a big IF, the Camaro/Firebird does make a return (IF they go away in the first place) they will more likely than not be sharing a platform with another model. (Possibly the proposed RWD Saturn offering, or something from the rumored all RWD Caddy line-up) If that were the case they wouldn't be F-bodies anymore, but would share the letter designation with whatever platform they are sharing.

This is what a Moderator said in another section:

"Word out of the GM channels is that the 5thgen will be out 2004-2005 and be based on the new Cadillac "sigma" chassis."

Before this get's shut down move your responses to http://www.nethirdgen.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/003336.html

Thanks for the response, so far!

Heard in a magazine that GM is closing the Canadien plant so they can build the F-body in the Corvette plant in Bowling Green Kentucky, which is underutilized. It kind of makes sense to build the performance models all in one place since they already share the same engine.

how could they shut the Fbody plant down when the SSR is about to be produced there later this year for when the 2003 model is introduced in early '02? hmmmm
i bet the Fbody will only have a couple of years of retirement before its return.
cuz i highly doubt GM would use the canadian plant for the SSR production only

F-bodies are dead because no one buys them anymore. It's a catch-22. They don't hold their value at all. This makes it easy to buy used ones in great shape for short money. Which means they sell fewer new ones.

We are the few. We may be the proud too, but we are definitely the few.

What about the Aussie LS1 cars?? Will the F-body's cancellation affect those cars? If not, GM can use those platforms to hold us over till the Camaro comes back. Truthully ...IMHO, I think the SSR looks like crap. It looks more cute than agressive. Not a good look for a Camaro replacement.
