I need some opinions (40k of pix)

I have been wanting to do this for a while, so I took an extra hood cowel and painted it black for my yellow 87 Formula. I just wanted to see some opinions. I personally like it the same as the original yellow cowel. But it does make the car look a little more sporty, atleast to me.

I think it works well for yellow, but some of the other colors it would take the right color. Like matching either the interior color, the color of the decals, or the color of the lower stripe (if applicable).

I like it, looks real good. What kind of hood is that, never saw one with a cowl on the side (except 82-84?) TA's. BTW What is the yellow on your car called, cause that color looks real good.

I got the same hood on my Formula. I was thinking about painting it yellow and now I think I am. I was offered a gta hood and front bumper for my hood but now I am having second thoughts about it after seeing yours.

I have that hood on my '83 TA which is an '86 look alike. I love the hood, it looks really sporty, especially with the front end of an '86 on my '83. They came stock with the '82-'84 TA's I believe, and with the later Formulas. My hood is a fully functional air induction.

The Hood, called by GM as the "Power Buldge" hood, originally was produced from 82-84 for the Trans Am. In beginning of 1987 the Firebird S/E was dropped and the Formula was re-introduced after being dropped for the body change in 1982. GM decided to use the 82-84 T/A hood with the wrap around "Aero Spoiler" on an otherwise standard Firebird body.
The Ground effects that were optional from GM were not available on the 87-92 Formula. The quickest & easiest way to determine if a Car was a formula would be the hood & the aero spoiler that was taken from the T/A & GTA. Formulas were NEVER offered with a V6 either.

If you have a firebird or a T/A and want the "Power buldge" hood, hang on to your pantyhose cause to get a new hood it will cost you (from the dealer or classic industries) around $682.00, and they are usually quickly snatched up in junkyards. The Standard & T/A hoods can be purchased for 189.95(std) or 209.95(T/A) for reproduction or 329.95(std) or 457.38(T/A) for GM parts.

The color is the original color used on the IROC-Z & the FORMULA only (as far as I know) it is called Yellow Gold (51U) or WA # ( 8929 ) for paintshops to match.

Just a note, when you look at the paint chips at the paint store it looks more pale than it really is. When the car gets older it will become more pale from the sun bleaching. IF you are going to change the color of your car and are not interested in a "Stock" firebird color and are not totally against Mustangs, I really like one of the bright yellows that the new 2000/2001 mustangs have. It is not the Schoolbus (orange/yellow) but a real nice bright yellow. check it out...

sammy,
I find it ineteresting that you say that it reminds you of the old musclecars, because I was watching Nash Bridges. I liked the way the Black shaker hood looked on his Cuda, that is where I got the idea from..

Camaro6speed,
I thought about the rims, and have been keeping my eyes open for something that I really like. I have considered a set like the 17" Ronal wheelks like on the 91-92 firehawk, but those seem to be non existant. Or at least I have not seen any for sale for a long time.

I also like the 17" 5 spoke Rims on the newer WS6's 7 the newer Firehawks. The rims have to fit the car, and not look Japanese (Didn't want to say "Rice") DOE! I did it anyway. I don't think I would want Chrome, because there is nothing else chrome on the car. I would probably go with a brushed Aluminum or polished Aluminum. just thinking out loud though.

John

Modyfiying cars is all about personal expression and identity... that is your own touch - therefore it is good. I kinda like it myself.
