Re: all red tail lights..

ok since im too lazy to go outside and look is the plastic amber all the way through?? Or in theory could i sand it down a bit then paint over it with a red? im assuming thats how steveo did krisb's but i can still see the amber a bit, is it noticable?

Re: all red tail lights..

Yes the amber color goes all the way through the lens. Most people, (including myself) tape off the light except for the amber, sand the area lightly and use a paint thinner type cleaner to clean the surface before painting it. I believe candy apple red from Testors is what everyone is using for the red. I then hit the whole light assembly with a coat of clear coat. (optional). Some will argue that painting the lens from the inside looks better, but thats just a matter of opinion.

Re: all red tail lights..

when you cleared over them did you use the same kind of clear coat that goes over base coat paint and use a paint gun.. or did you guys just spray bomb it?

Re: all red tail lights..

since this is basically a do-it-yourself project I'm moving this to A&D where it is usually discussed and the information about it is better there, too.

Re: all red tail lights..

I did mine on my 88 Camaro when I had it.

Then I took it a step further, and rewired them to come on with the tail lights, and still flash when signaling

Re: all red tail lights..

I did it with my base bird lenses too. I used Testors translucent candy apple red model spray paint. I painted the inside of the lenses and the outside.

Re: all red tail lights..

so if i clear coated it would that make them easier to polish? i want to do this mod so bad but im afraid its going to look like some 10yr old did it. I want to take a different set of lights and sand them down then shoot them with a red then clear coat, and if i can polish them up and if they turn out well they're going on lol

Re: all red tail lights..

clear coat just adds a nice shine to the lights. after clear coat i gave them a buff and they turned out great. If you want to do the mod, TAKE YOUR TIME. Be very patient while painting/waiting for the paint to dry. If you rush this it will turn out bad.

Re: all red tail lights..

yeah which is why im buyin another set so i can do it right without having to worry wether or not ill have them back on the car in time, just out of curiosity/partial stupidity, what did you buff them with? and im assuming when you clear coat it you go over the entire lense? I would i need to sand the white light a bit then wouldnt i?
