Re: Metallic Black

no . you will be pissed. metalic gives a brownish effect with those flakes. the black won't look as deep as it would without. you'd hate it in the daylight.

Re: Metallic Black

I don't have a bird but I would not like my 92 Camaro in metal flake...he's right it won't look as deep and touch ups will be hard to get matched too...

Re: Metallic Black

Just about to paint my car metallic black. My truck was painted two years ago, and it looks fine, I see no brown, tho we had a very light batch.

Re: Metallic Black

I rely alot by the opinions I get here. Whether it be mechanical questions and/or cosmetic, I heavily respect the opinions from Thirdgen.org. I have only had a 3rd gen for a couple of years and I have learned a great deal from this site and its people.
I have decided against the metallic black and decided to return her to her original color. I think it was called "Pontiac Black" until they used it on saturns. I believe the paint code is 8555.

I disagree, I dont think that mine has any kind of brownish effect. Also I love mine in the sunlight!! The metal flakes give it such a clean sparkle and I see a little blue and green color in the direct sun and love it.

I was at the Philly auto show in Feb 2006 and saw the SRT8 Charger in the Brilliant Black Metallic and fell in love with it. From that day that is the color that I wanted to paint my 83 TA and I did that summer.

One thing that I would kind of agree with is that it might not look as "deep" as a plain black. I like the metalic look better myself, rather than the jet black, but it is just an opinion.

Here is a link of some pics I took of my car once I was done washing and waxing...

Re: Metallic Black

I have never seen any metallic black paint look brown. I've seen metallic black on a Volvo S80 and on a 300C/Magnum and it looks great.

Re: Metallic Black

my car is metallic black and looks great. it has a great depth because it is metallic and not metal flake. there is a huge difference. also, there is no brown. and in the sun light it looks great.

Re: Metallic Black

Go with Volvo's Black Sapphire Metallic if you don't want the "brownish" effect. My wife has it on her S60. The metallic is sapphire (blue-ish) in color, and it looks awesome. Prettiest color I've ever seen on a car IMO.

One thing that I would kind of agree with is that it might not look as "deep" as a plain black.
You are right on this. You can't get a deeper look than plain b/c black that has been cut & buffed. But the metallic doesn't show dirt near as bad!

Basically, if the paint comes that way (i.e. with the metalic flakes in it) or if they add a layer of flake.

Buddy of mine had his Coronet painted quote "Deep Black" and had them put metalic flake to it.... and it had an off tone. Not to sure it was brown, but it sure wasnt deep black.

So if you can get the paint that has it, like Toyota's Pewter, then you should be ok.

On my '92 I went with "factory" black. Just look up your paint code on the door. I also had three layers (mils) of clear wet sanded to a sick gloss....check the reflection in my avitar...

Re: Metallic Black

Yeah, factory black with a good amount of clear can't be beat. That came out that deep with only 3 layers of clear? Very nice!

I even noticed yesterday my car was dirty (been raining for 3 days here in the Chi) and still has a nice shine to it...I say at the very least 2 layers of clear but three for sure will do the trick...
