My 91 is looking pretty sad. The old purple tint has been baked on by the arizona sun for the past 17 years. How can I get this off without doing too much damage to the defrost lines? Or is that hopeless?

 

if you can peel it off peel off the majority. hit the glue and old residue with rubbing alcohol or maybe some ammonia. get a respirator while doing this. i made myself very dizzy and nasouse in the back of my hatch removing the glue

 

I think I used warm soapy water and sometimes soapy water along with a heatgun.

 

ice scraper, one for each hand.

 

no heat gun, it just warms up the glue again. It will work for some of it but not all. I just redone my back window I used contact cement remover lol, it worked perfectly, when you are done using it, then you gotta clean that off with windex or some other window cleaner.

 

Spray soapy water on the inside....cut open a BLACK plastic trash bag & stick it to the watery surface. You can do the outside as well, if you simply want it to heat up faster.

The black plastic is build the heat up & make peeling the film off easy. From there, it's simply a matter of removing any residual adhesive left behind. Mineral spirits/acetone & a roll a paper towels will be your friend at that point.

 

I tried ammonia, windex, and 4 razor blades. Finally got it.

 

they sell a spray bottle of "window tint remover" at most auto parts stores, but it honestly doesnt work that well, but nothing really seems to. i would suggest the removal liquid and a razor blade.

 

I just removed the tint off my passenger door on my 86 with a razor blade and soapy water. Took about 30 minutes. New law starting July 1 in Chicago raises tint fines from $25 to $250 for any front windows....not worth it

 

I just took off the tint off the hatch last week. All you really need is a lot of blades, and a high pressure spray bottle. I recommend spraymaster, the sell them at home depot.

Cut at the corners and take off as much tint as you can. After that is a couple of hours of blade work. You will need a lot since the loose their sharpness after a couple of uses. Then use the bottle with soap and water and spray and wipe the leftover residue. The I finished it off with windex.

I just pulled off a full hatch worth of that purple crap, it came off with no effort at all. I just used a key to get a corner up and it came off like magic.

All that was left was one rectangle of adhesive, after looking that I think it was just some other sticker that was not cleaned off correctly before slapping on the tint?

I'm still shocked at how easy it was to pull it all off!

 

Peel the tint off and hope it comes off in big pieces and then go at the adhesive. Ammonia is the best thing to use to get the adhesive off off. You can use razor blades to get the tint off the side glass, but you'll want to use a very fine steel woff on the hatch to reduce the risk of destroying the defroster. Just make sure you do a good job on getting the adhesive off or the new tint will bubble in the spots you missed.

 

I used 3M's adhesive remover (comes in a Red can) from a body shop paint supplier near me. You can also use the 3M wax and grease remover and I tried rubbing alcohol before that with some shop towels (the blue ones) and a little bit of elbow grease.

The 3M stuff is the best, just make sure that you wear some nitrile or latex glove

 

get a steamer...like they use for carpet cleaning....takes 5-10 mins max
