Are you cleaning only with the intention to chrome them?

Well. I don't know much about chroming but I do know they sell liquid products to polish and get that chrome look so thats what I was gonna go for. My rims are just a bit grimey with lots of tar between the spokes of the rim and rusty from the brakes. I tried buffing with a grinder but there is too many groves to try to fit it in.

those liquids take quite a bit of work in order for your aluminium to resemble chrome. but i recommend simple green. great stuff ,safe, and works on everything

Simple Green is a good all purpose cleaner but I used to do detail and I always found that any type of wheel acid can do wonders.

Re: Best way to clean rims?

Napa has this thing in a huge bottle called, aluminum cleaner. I went in and asked for something to polish up my aluminum rims and they guy told me that truckers use this stuff to clean their rigs. It worked really well, and it didnt take my clear coat off but it ate away at any dirt and brake dust that was on there in a matter or minutes. I used the same thing to clean up mt PBR calipers before i put them on and it made them all shiny and clean also.
