need info on what to do about rust spot

I have an 88 formula I just bought and I wanted to make it look really sharp, it had very little rust spots along the wheel well and along the back where the bumper meets the rest of the car, not to bad but it gets to me a little cause I love my car so much, took it to a body shop today, really good guy brother to one of my best friends, he told me very straight, he said they dont touch rust spots because once they start there is nothing you can do to stop them and if they fix it, it would just come back and they wouldnt want to cheat me or make there name bad, so I was wondering what I can do to make my car as good as possible and possibly what to do to slow the rust proccess down and make it look sharp, im going down south for school again and cars dont rust down there so that should help any other suggestions would be appreciated.

It all depends on the severity of the rust. Rather it is coming from the inside or rusting from the outside. Since it isn't big, I would suggest sanding the rust down to the bare metal make sure all evidence of rust is gone. Using a die grinder, put a 50 grit wheel on and start sanding. Once it is down to the bare metal clean the area with some compressed air and some rubbing alcohol. Then I would suggest using a rust preventer called Extend. It comes in a blue spray bottle. Do what the instructions tell you. I would load this stuff on. Do one coat wait 10-20 minutes put another coat on, etc..etc... After you let this stuff dry for I think it says 24 hours, get some sort of bondo/body filler to smooth it out. Once the bondo is dry sand it smooth, then spray primer over the areas. Take it to a body shop and get it painted to match the car. This should last you a while depending on the rust. It is hard to stop and I don't think you could stop it for good, but keep it maintained and you should be ok!
