What do you think is RI*ER?
Hello, everyone i have been looking around lately and alot of people on third gen. have different thoughts and opinions about what is ri*er and what is so called "acceptable" parts, mods etc. to do to our cars and other peoples as well. So lets see what you have to say? Pictures would help as well.

*****: Unnecessary mods to the appearance of your car / super cocky "my car is faster than a Saleen s7" attitude with nothing under the hood to back it up.
*Note a car can LOOK like a *****, and not BE a *****...
It's all opinion, what do YOU think makes a car a *****?

Ok well i just wanted to see other peoples opinions...but it think ri*er is when a kid takes a hack saw to his 90's altima and zip ties a dust pan or somthin plastic idk? to the hood lol no lie this kid at my school did it not to mention the half broken plastic spinning rims!
Re: What do you think is RI*ER?
well for one, anyone with a honda that is super cocky about how great it is, (well wait a minute, i am like that with my firebird, but thats different....)
and those 12 foot tall wings for no reason-it makes it look cheap to me
and the thing i hate the most is that crappy mufflers that make that really loud annoying sound when they are going like 5 mph!
ur car is suppose to be what you like, but too many teenagers get a honda cuz its "Cool"
but i really do not hate them, i just laugh a little when i see someone driving one!

Anything I consider rice is something that does not fit with the rest of the car. A car needs well executed theme, match the colors, tie it all together..

Re: What do you think is RI*ER?
Ok, this is a bit of a dangerous thread so I am going to throw my two cents in before it goes south. To me the definition is a multi part issue. First it is the owner. A guy who knows nothing useful about his car, pays everyone else to do the work, but talks like he knows everything and has done everything. Also the attitude mentioned above, the unrealistic ideal that their car is superior to ANYTHING on the road (like the guy in town with a '93 Ford Escort GT with 18" chrome rims, coffee can exhaust, and clear corners that heckles me every time he sees me in my f-bodies). Then it is mods done to the car. Mostly just sensless appearance modifications that are only done so the owner looks cool or fast, or sounds that way. I even classify a guy with a stock f-body that just hacked off his exhaust to sound fast in the same category, sorry guys.
It isn't so much the car itself, just the owner. I have seen a street driven Civic break into the high 10s (DR tires added for the track), but I've also seens v8 Camaros that looked fast stuck in the 16s (always makes me cry!). It's all about the owner and the attitude they present.

Re: What do you think is RI*ER?
I agree that the 10 foot wings, coffee can/weedeater sounding/fart can mufflers and huge rims and plastic body kits generally denote rice in my area. Also included in that category, for me at least, are any mods that are hacked/half-assed onto the car, the stupid vinyl graphics, fake hood/roof/fender scoops, and dark tint. Not to mention the fake nitrous bottles in the back and driving like they are in a screen test for Fast and the Furious 4.
HOWEVER, if you have some or all of the above, yet everything is done properly (ie. the body kit is smoothed/integrated into the body, car is painted all 1 color or with a color scheme, etc) AND the engine has the ballz to back up the looks, then I would say its not rice.
For example, my little bro is into 2nd gen eclipses and talons, but I don't consider him a *****. His first one he put a wing and body kit on it, BUT he also rebuilt the engine with all forged internals, added a turbo and FMU and converted from auto to stick. He did all his own work too. Would I consider that rice, no. And not just cause we're related. He put the work into to do it right, and he has since done a couple more cars that turned out real nice.
The other thing that separates "tuners" or "carnuts" or "true enthusiasts" from the "ricers" in my mind is KNOWLEDGE. The guys/gals who are truly into their cars and can intelligently discuss engines/trannies/suspensions, modding, etc are usually the ones who take the time to make their cars look and perform as best as they can and are into doing the work themselves. They are not ricers to me. The ricers are the ones who make stupid claims about the performance of their mods/cars, buy the "big name" parts just so they can say they have them instead of buying the part that actually fits their application the best, plaster the part manufacturer's stickers all over the fenders/doors/hoods, and don't know the difference between an SBC and an STD.
Sorry for the long rant, it's a boring day at work.

That's exactly the point I was trying to make. You just did it in 10,000 fewer words. Member

Re: What do you think is RI*ER?
Yeah, over the few years I have been asked that question my answer gets more direct every time. The attitude is mostly what gets me with these guys, and that they just won't let you walk away, they have to keep pushing. I've got posts in other parts of this site that talk a lot more about it though, even give some more of my humorous encounters. My favorite is still the guy that tried to tell me his car was better because his engine was measured in liters instead of cubic inches! My friends and I had a great laugh at his expense.
BTW, love that photo, good visual example of the subject.

Re: What do you think is RI*ER?

I did miss the part of "acceptable" mods, and have to agree with the moderator to a point. Take some time to learn about your car, and the things you intend to do to it, do your mods right (save the money to have it done, or learn the skills to do it yourself). Decide on a purpose, weather it is racing, cruising, a show car, a daily driver, or maybe even a mix. It is your car and accordingly will be build to your taste. Knowing what you have, and what the car truely is will go a long way towards avoiding the rice image. But above all, HAVE FUN!

Re: What do you think is RI*ER?
I absolutely love them little imports with the brapp cans and ginormous wings.
Here in California, they are everywhere!
I restored my IROC because I really love that body style and have since they came out. It's my Blvd car and I cruise it every chance I can. It's great when one of these 'R' Types revs to 10,000 at the light. I just shake my head and laugh.
It's better when I'm in my 600 hp, raced prep Z06. They do the same revving until I flip the swith on my electric cut outs and rap the long tube, no cats pipes. I have yet had any import challenge this car.
As far as modding your car, I subscribe to that famous sayng from the movie "Boogie Nights"... ~...wear what you dig~
