removing pinstripes over clear

I just bought an 85 and its got some stupid pin striping on it,, I want to take it off,, it was painted over the clear coat. Someone said paint thinner would take it off and I asked my friend who is a professional body man and he said thinner would be too strong and it would eat through the clear coat,, he said I should use reducer because its less strong and should take off the stripes. Would using reducer be the best way to take the stripes off?

depends on what kind of paint they used to put them on with. if they used a two part activated paint you might not get them off.

Re: removing pinstripes over clear

If they used 'oneshot striping enamel' you're in a tough spot. If I was you, I would find a website online called pinhead lounge. Its a website for panel stripers. (If you have some time to kill...their work is amazing). You can also try www.autobody101.com. Ask the pro's what they use. You need to find something that wont soften the clearcoat. Dont use lacquer thinner, its too strong. If they use catalyzed enamel, you'll probably have to tape off both sides of the pin stripe and use like 3m swirl mark remover. Id ask a pro first. Repainting that is going to almost surely constitute a full repaint or at least a blend at a body line. If this is your 20yr old factory clear coat, you may honestly be best going to a very skilled paint shop since our factory clearcoat is anything but robust.

Keep us posted
