Possible purchase
I may have the opportunity to purchase a 1987 GTA with 160 000 kms on the clock and 20 000 on the new engine. 305 5 speed, Red interior, digital dash, t-tops, no rust. The guy is asking 5900. Good deal? Opinions please. I would be selling my 1990 GTA to purchase this one.

$5900? Depends what else is done to it. Pictures would help a lot. That is actually fairly high priced, especially for a 305 car regardless of it being a 5 speed. How good of shape is it?

Re: Possible purchase
considering the mileage/kms are high, its a high price, the car had better be spotless inside, outside, underneath and under the hood.

Re: Possible purchase
Well from the pics I've seen it appears to be near perfect. When i talked to him he said it would maybe need a paint job in a few years, I don't know if it's fading or clear coat peeling as in the pictures it looks fine. The interior is red cloth with Ultima seats. Everything is original except the engine is what I'm told and is how it looks in the pictures. I am going to look at it tomorrow so I will have a better handle on things. As for my 90, it's black on Black leather, 305 TPI 5 speed, new rear end, new rad, new heater core, new water pump, new gauge cluster coming, new tires, new stereo, the LH fender and door have been replaced by prev owner, the engine needs to be overhauled, the park brake doesn't work, the RH door has a dent where someone tried to kick under the mirror to unlock the door, the LH fender is bent in, the nose is cracked, the airbag was removed, the mounts for the hatch motor is busted, the odometer says 262 000 kms but the speedo was out so it's right around 200 000 from what i calculated. But on the other hand I would dare to say my 1990 is more rare than the 87, and being black and gold will look pretty good when she's all done up. He also told me some of the lights on the Digital dash don't illuminate sometimes. So I'm torn, i'll know better tomorrow but by that list it seems I'm better to keep mine lol. More opinions please.
Oh and as for the conversions. It works out to:
1990 - 124 275 miles and I paid, with conversion at the time, about $2500 USD
1987 - 99 419 miles on vehicle, 12 427 miles on engine, and cost in USD, as of today, is $5108.89

The 87' isn't worth the money he is asking. I can tell just by what you said, not even looking at the pictures. $5100 and it's going to need to be re-painted in a few years? For what you'd end up spending on his car and selling yours for, you could make your 90' much nicer than the 87'.

Yeah I was thinking that. I got a wicked suprise today when I tried to install the original Airbag wheel and found the prev owner cut the wires too short to re-connect so now I need to find a clock spring assembly for the wheel now. The joy continues lol

Re: Possible purchase
haha thanks but unfortunately it has some hood dents and fender dent, small surface rust bubble on one fender, and scratches,etc...really needs new paint and spoiler but what I love about my car is that the paint looks flawless at night or in the shade! But I am picky and want it perfect so i'm willing to spend the money. By the way i'm 20 . Yeah I saw the car for sale on the site...not a bad thing at all just was wondering. I go to calgary often as my sister lives there. Might drive the GTA there this summer too, we'll have to meet up if thats the case. Anyway try to stay motivated, i've too had that problem and thought about buying another GTA instead of fixing mine but fact is i've done so much to it already and by the time I buy another one there could be more problems and it'll cost the same in the end. Mine has 171,000kms with rebuilt motor 10,000km's ago. Not bad but would be nice to have low mileage oh well. Keep the GTA and remember only 259 were made for canada in 1990. Are you on the gtasourcepage.com at all? Josh (sorry for rambling lol)

Re: Possible purchase
haha, gotta love the heatercore hahaha. I drove mine back from Calgary at 11 a night because it had an overheating issue so it was cooler at night. Got home to find a giant puddle of coolant on the passenger floor. Heatercore was the first thing I did. I bought a new battery, and I am waiting for 1 caliper and the front rotors and then my brakes are being replaced completely. Prev owner had some rig for the fan to turn on manually, got rid of that business lol. I really want to make this car just cherry and hand it down to my son or daughter one day. I have been to gtasourcepage a bit and got the stats on my car. Apparently only 78 built were 5 speeds... so lower that number for Canada, minus all the ones smashed and written off, then factor in color combo, I think i got a pretty rare bird lol. That was one of the reasons I bought it. And I'm gonna try to go as stock as possible with it, with the exception of the regualr upgrades (stereo). I would love to own a 1992 Jamaica Yellow GTA 5 speed but... good luck haha,

Re: Possible purchase
So I looked at the car today. Not worh the money. I would put the clutch in to shift and the car would die, it would not stay running, then when it finally did run good and I drove it for a bit it sounded very loose and ready to fall apart, the fenders were bulged out, and when you depressed the clutch it made a filthy noise. I'll keep my 1990 Thanks! It was pissing coolant from the heater core and still managed to make it from Calgary to here *2 hour drive* with no problems!
