Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

how about the trans am sheet metal on top of the "pop up lights" but trimmed off from the rest..and have the sheet metal slide under the under the hood instead... Then have "corvette concept 2006" lights to brighten the way, but custom... hey if the camaro dudes are going to install bmw lights in their cars.. why just fixed light...in my old 5 series that picture i posted above.. they were auto-leveling, and side to side!!..i like this thread only if the Mod dude made it a Sticky.

thats an not really true...its a LOT of modification, they actually made a whole bumper cover in fiberglass to fit the lights in. way harder that it would appear

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

so i just read the whole thread, and i really like the lights and plan on doin them myself after i get the body work and paint done on my car.. my questions are as follows..

1) does this mod use the factory headlight switch, or do you have to put in a new switch

2) a wireing diagram would be very helpful for anyone who wants to do this mod.

i have no problem doin some cutting, but what about boxing in behind the e36 headlights with some 14 gauge metal (or larger, i can get up to ten gauge if i feel its needed) and welding it in, kinda like a headlight box. if the whole thing is welded everywhere it can be it shouldnt take too much away from the strength of the support, but on top of that if it would make someone feel safer, it could prolly still be braced too. so to everyone posting what they have on the mod here in the way of pics... excellent job and im sure we all appreciate the footwork here, i know i do. ill be refrenceing this thread to do the job for sure.

For the record, I did not specify how much modding had to be done. However, it was not a lot as you say. In comparison to most true customizing, it's about an average amount. It's worth it either way.

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

I just bought the euro style e36 lights with CCFL angel eyes. I could easily modify the e36 housings to minimize any cutting of the core support. However, I don't know if cutting any material from the bottom of the hood is absolutely required?

Can anyone who's done this mod shed a little light?

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

My lights are different than yours. I got the ones exactly like ramair21. I'm also going remove most of the rear housing, but not on the topside near the lens.

Did anyone else have to cut the hood structure any?

To all that have done this light mod :

Could you guys post some pics from a top view of the light housings (with hood up) and any pics of mounting points / mounting brackets...?

usacamaro - your hood is not a stock hood though... it may be different on the bottom side of the hood (as far as bracing/support etc..) than your hood?

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

I like them, but I have to agree. BMW lights belong on a BMW. Especially since I'm a pretty big fan of the 3 series cars, mainly the E36 and E46. A friend used to own an E36 325i, and I was considering an E46 3 series before I bought the Mustang.

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

Yeah I had an E36, so I'm partial to seeing them stay on the cars they were built for I guess. *shrug*

I was really thinking about getting a 2004 325/330Ci for my next car (Alpine White, of course with black interior and aluminum dash trim), or an E38--a 2001 Sport showed up online in the ultra rare Imola Red with black interior and it was mint as could be but after joining some bimmer boards and hearing those guys themselves say the cars would tear me apart I decided not to go down the road of $2000 catalytic converters on a 100k mile 740i...glad I didn't, because I always wanted a Mustang anyway.

my hood is stock i just cut it up to make a custom cowl hood but the front is still stock with the stock underside .
i have been real busy with work so i havent been able to get out and work on the lights . but i did get the blue halos in so hopefully next week i can get some time to find out how to mount the lights in.

so this thread is about modifing our camaros and people are actually tryin to figure out how to do this mod, also you are on a forum specifically about camaros, third gens to be exact and while i love all kinds of cars, your post was pretty off topic, im sure nobody really cares that much about what car you almost bought unless its a camaro and it resides in your garage now.

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

After reading this whole thread for the 45768th time, i gather that its just whatever you have to do to mount them securely. Im about to pull the trigger on a set of lights and red angel eyes......
Im also going to smoke out the front lens, so that when you cut on the halos, all you see is the evil red eyes........

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

well i got one light mounted. i used some 1" wide 1/8" flat metal to make some brackets. i welded them to the rad support and used some self tapping screws to mount the lights. i have one bracket on the top and one on the bottom. i still need to add one to the side to make it really sucure. when i finish i will make a cover to cover the lights up from the top. will post up pics soon.

heres a pic of the top where you can see the bracket i did . simple straight bar welded and two screws. the bottom is just a L shape with two screw in the bottom . i still need to make the side one which will be on the left side.

Wiring is simple if you're not a beginner. The headlight wires on the car are the tan and green. Just get the socket pigtails for whatever bulb your e36 demands, mine were 9005/9006. Wire them in. You can get fancy and add relays to go ahead and do the ever popular relay upgrade. halos are 2 wires, tap into the nearby parking light which is a brown wire, the blue/light blue are for turn, brown is parking, black ground.

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

nope i didnt have to cut the stock to fit these headlights. i did cut it to make the cowl section but the front of the hood is still stock.
as for the wiring i have most of it figured out just going to splice the 9005 and 9006 sockets to the factory wiring the question i would have is ramair21 said he had to short the headlight switch so the low beams stay on when switching to high beams. i am not sure how to short out the switch.

Matt,
You did order the DDMtuning kit, right?
Are there bulbs in all 4 sockets, or does it just come with 2 in the outer ones? Also, will i be able to use aftermarket red halos in them?

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

Got one headlight in yesterday. Mostly just cut the headlight housing in back, and did very little cutting of the radiator support. Ill post pictures whenever my cable company decides to get the lines back up..(dang tornados)
Also, NO cutting of the hood. If you cut enough of the front bumper out at the headlight, so that the glass of the headlight sits down on it, the hood shuts just fine.

Tried wiring these things up like matt said, but when one light works, the other goes out and vice versa....??? My old headlights had green, brown, and one black, but i only have two wires on my 9005-9006 plugs. Any thoughts?

dont know the colors, but one wire is a ground, the other two are high/low beam, thats why they are going on and off.

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

I shorted out my head light switch for the high beams so when the high beams come on the lows will also stay on

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

How do you mean, "shorted it out"? Do I have to do it at the switch, or can it be done under the hood?
Also, does anyone know what color the fog light wire is? Mines been cut....

This is wire diagram i used. This is a before image before you short out the head light switch

Then this is after. You need to use a 16 gauge wire and jump the the main power going to the head light switch to the low light circuit. I circled where the jumper is. (Excuse my "paint" work)

Re: BMW E36 Headlight Conversion

AH...i see. You just made it to where the low beams have constant power no matter what position the dimmer switch is in. Now all i gotta do is figure out how to wire my halos to this fog light switch......
