my car is going to be sitting in my garage for about 4 months and its not going to be driven at all. im looking for a cheap cover to buy that will fit the car ('92 camaro), and that will keep the dust off of the finish. does anyone know where i can get the cheapest cover for this? i don't really want to spend $100. Also, do i need to do any kind of prep or anything before letting my car sit that long? engine wise? thanks

The cheap covers from your local auto shop don't do squat. I know from experience. As far as the engine, 4 months is nothing. It'll do that standing on its head. Just make sure the coolant mix is right, and that the oil is ok before parking. I have to store mine at least that long every year.

As for storage, fill your tank with gas and add fuel stabalizer. You don't want that gas to go bad and gum up your fuel system.

I have seen cheap covers at Auto parts stores for $35 to $50. You may want to invest in a better quality one, however.

Try to siphon out gasoline if at all possible (if not use the stabilizer) as gasoline begins to break down after approx. 3 months. Turn engine to TDC. Your engine will be fine. As far as covers go- park it the garage (if you can) or in the basement (like I do)!

May depend alittle on your climate too, if your up north you may not want some cheap *** cover that will get brittle and ruihn in the freeze and low temps.

If it's in a garage, all you need to do is keep the dust off of it. Don't have to worry about weather and stuff. I use a cheap wal-mart cover in the winter months and once in a while in the summer. I wash the cover once in a while and always put the cover on when the car is clean. The next summer it looks just like it did when I put the cover on.
Why store it at TDC. I'm assuming you are talking about cylinder #1. Sure the valves will be shut on that cylinder, but others will be open. It doesn't matter where the engine is at, some valves will be open and some shut no matter what.

i should have been more specific, i do have a spot for it in the garage, so i am not worried about rain/snow. all i need is something to block the dust. essentially i want to wash, wax, and cover this car the day before i go to college, and when i get back home for break, i want to be able to take off the cover and have it be just the way i left it.

82camaro, that wal-mart idea sounds good, is that cover custom fit for your camaro or is it just a generic cover? how much did it cost? does it block dust?

Anyone else, what is TDC?

Just another tip:

Put the car up on stands or blocks, but under the control arms and axle. This way the suspension is still loaded (don't want it to hang down for that long), but the tires are off the ground so they don't develop a bruised spot from sitting on one place for so long (vibrations later that no balance job can fix).

I saw that in Motor Trend, I think...

You can get a cheap car cover for $20 at Walmart or a higher qualoty one for about $50.

I bought the cheap $20 one and it wroks fine in keeping the dust and sun off of it.

The wal-mart one is 'semi-custom', that is to say it fits other cars about the same size. It fits just fine and blocks all the dust and stuff. My garage is just off a dirt road so the cover gets covered in dirt. I've had it for at least 3 years(probably more)

I don't know about you, but I take my car to college... There's plenty of 80's mudstains ther and not many F-bodies... gotta represent... plus the chicks dig fast cars>

A dirt cheap car cover will work just fine to keep dust off, but so will a couple of bed sheets... just my $.03

Last fall I bought one of those cheap $30 covers. It held up ok through the winter, but with the intense heat and acid rain, it got dstroyed. It has become very thin and brittle, so it's time for me to get a new one. I knew I was in trouble when I saw blue stuff on thee ground in front of the car.
