I've given it a few names (when I'm working on it and things do not go my way). Let us just say that the "names" are not appropriate to mention. LOL

Everyone in my family always had names for their cars - especially my mom. 40 years ago (yes, sadly I said 40), she was naming cars. When I was about 7, we had a 1970 Malibu, she was named Miss Nelly. When I was 14, we had a Oldsmobile land yacht of some kind, it was named George.
My grandfather always had names for his cars, but I never knew what they were - he kept them to himself. They were however always girls, cause "she won't fire" or "she dumped her oil again". He always did his own repairs, and had a detached garage - the women (ie grandma, or my aunts, etc.) were never allowed in the garage - it was never a spoken rule, but just understood that no woman was ever allowed in Pap's garage. Even when the bay doors were open, the entry door was closed. It was kinda like when working on the cars, he was having an affair. I think he just wanted the alone time of man and machine. And he always talked to his 'girls' when he thought no one was listening. Guess it rubbed off - anytime I'm wrenching and the wife comes out to the driveway, I get uneasy like she's interrupting something! Weird.
Us kids (the boys) were always welcome in the garage, and were even kinda expected to be there if Pap was in there. He was always having us help fix whatever he was working on, whether car or motorcycle or snowmobile or whatever. As a 5 year old, you kinda seek the loving gentle attention of Grandma, especially when we're talking about western PA mountains at Xmas and no heat in the garage - but Pap made sure you were in the garage with him. He'd never ask, but he'd make enough racket that you just had to see what was going on. Even if it was a 90* June day and he was working on the boat, he'd fire up the snowmobile and rev it knowing we'd come out to see what the hell he was up to ("had to turn her over and keep her lubed").
Now looking back, I'm sure that's why all us grandkids have the mental ability to just grab a wrench and take something apart to fix it (or at least attempt to) without fear. He would even take things like dead tv's and toasters and put them in the toy box in the basement so us kids could tinker!
And having thought about this a few years ago, I tried everything I could think of to get my kids to help me with my projects, so they could learn as well - but alas, the XBox generation can't be bothered with tooling - its not fast, exciting, adrenaline rushing stimulation. Maybe it's me - maybe I'm not as good at "allowing" a kid to help me as Pap was. But regardless, it's hard to compete with an XBox. Makes me happy to see the young guns on here trying to do their own work and trying to learn - just wish we could keep you fools from drinking and driving your rides into trees! DRINK WHILE WRENCHING, BUT DRIVE SOBER!
Sorry for the trip down memory lane - I got off on a tangent there.
alright, i know that this was posted 2009, but i just wanna say i'm 19 and love to work on cars. I also can build a computer, but working in the garage and feeling accomplished with what you did is so much more satisfying. a Computer is easy to build. A car is not. Originally Posted by camaronewbie

As for the thread,
i read all 212 posts, and i think i picked a name. The first girl i really like was name Melinda. So that's what it is. My 01 Cadillac Deville is called Caddie, and my 96 Bonneville ssei was Bonnie. I love my cars. Most people don't get it. But it has to be a girl name. Nobody wants to hear you say "I'm going for a ride in (Male Name)." Just doesn't cut it.

I had never named my camaro for the two years I have had it, I wanted a name that didn't conflict with someone from school. Anyway I was working on my camaro the other day hit my head off of the exhaust pipe and "Vanessa" just popped into my head, so it stuck for reasons I really don't understand haha

I named my baby Bessey. i named her after my grandfathers 1970 chevy c1500. i know it's a truck, but i liked the name and they were both blue.. so why not?

I named mine the "Lunatic" because she's almost killed me twice. But I guess if it had to be a girls name it would be Layla. My 2500HD Dura/Alli has always been called Sheila

I haven't named my 86 Z28 or my 85 T/A yet as I haven't had them that long. But my old 75 Camaro was named Vic after Vic Rattlehead the Megadeth mascot. And my 77 El Camino got named Panzer for obvious reasons. I'm sure both of the cars will get names eventually, just have to drive them and work on them a bit to find their personalities.

I only call them names when I'm working on them.

So my flat black 86 Z28 finally got named yesterday. My girlfriend and I were talking about what she should name her 97 Cavalier, and I suggested several four letter word for it, (I hate that car!)and she asked me what I had named the Camaro. I thought about it for a few minutes, and decided HE, yes he, would be named Mjollnir. For everyone not into Norse mythology, Mjollnir is the name of Thors' hammer. It's also refered to as the hammer of the gods. I figure my camaro might not be killing any giants, but it's already killed several ricers and a couple of mustangs.

LOL, I love the paint. Mine is all flat black from walmart.

I have always called my Iroc "the wasp". It has always been yellow, and I added black stripes long before Transformers came out. I wasn't too far off of the name "bumble bee." I guess I need to update my avatar pic.

my friend recently christened my car White Supremacy
on account of it being white and the fastest car of our friend-group.
it's not a racist meaning so don't start (its a car not a person anyways).

I once named my X 86 IROC-Z
I called her Sabrina
after the daughter of the woman I purchased her from

this name kinda stuck for my RS
cause she is white and reminded me of the white Z
I havent set a name for the new one yet
havent thought about it -maybe I will call her Sabrina too
cause she has these curves I really dig and shes like magic

I call my van Fred or "the fred van"

after my brothers old 70s rock band
he is to big and phat to be a girl
my friends in Cali have "the dead van"
which use to belong to Jerry Garcia

and a bigger one they call just "the undead"
they are all fat chevy 4x4s

I mostly agree with you, to the extent that if it's a car you work on like our 3rd gens, like bringing one back from the dead like mines. The name is just going to hit you and you'll know it's right.Originally Posted by 92z28camarokid
I was going to wait to name mine until after I get her painted, it will come to me then, u cant just take a name and fit it to the car. She will tell you her name when she's ready I'm waiting for her to tell me...I've thought of a lot of names for this one...but not really feeling what I've came up with.
Now, our other cars, 2001 malibu...I just called her BOO. My 2000 Firebird I mostly call "BESS" after Dick Turpins' horse BLACK BESS (the old English highwayman).
I've called most of my cars BESS. It's been kinda like a Doctor Who thing really. Same old me in a different body.
I feel I can't have 2 BESSES. It's just not right. IMO. So I'm waiting.

it's actually an interesting thread...I'm glad I came across it.
I wasn't sure how much of a widespread thing naming your car actually is.
I guess most folks call it "baby" at least once.

My fiancee named her car (white one) Daisy. Picked it up for $600. TPI, 350, auto, 9 bolt, 4 wheel disks. Had a bad fuel pump and no battery. Pulled the tank and put a new pump and strainer in it, picked up a new bat and fired it up. After a few more minor repairs and some upgrades I've got about $1000 in it now and she drives it daily.
She calls mine the Beast because of the 6 spd and how firm the ride is for her. She thinks my brakes are kinda touchy also. Wilwoods and LS1 rears will do that to ya.
But I think her brakes are scary...........going from a big brake disk/disk car to a car with stock binders is a shock. I always wonder if I'll be able to stop. Brakes are in good condition with good pads, but just not anywhere near the brakes on my car.
