Hey, I just picked up a set of dark smoked 92 GTA Taillights. I was wondering if anyone has put them on their 89 or older GTA? I want to try them on my black GTA but weather is going to suck around here for the next couple weeks. Will they fit and how do you think they would look?

 

They'll physically fit just fine. But I do suspect (OK, know) there will be some wiring issues to get the sockets to match & all the lights to work correctly. But that isn't all that big of a deal, so I say go for it!

 

I have them on my 89 formula.
I had to change out the 2 outer most light sockets of the 89 harness to the 91 style.
91s have more of what id call a 90deg light socket= wires out of the side of socket
where the 89 has a strait on style= wires strait out the back of socket

 

Maybe on Formula tail lights, but not GTA tail lights. My 87 GTA & 89 GTA both had 90 degree sockets, which were also part of the STS conversion, since 2 of the bulbs were single filaments & dual filaments are required.

 

The guy I got them off of cut the wires with plenty left and left the sockets and bulbs attached right into the back of the lights. I think it might look kinda cool.

 

CUT the wires? He coulda just unplugged the harness! That is how my 89 lights were done. Now I have a spare set of lights & a plug in harness for them.

 

he might have cut the wires to sell them with the sockets...I guess for "custom" applications???

 

well post pics of how it comes out and if it doesnt work, my 92 GTA lights are screwed, ill take them off your hands!!!

 

put them in , im still on the fence if i like them or not on mine , ive had mine on for a year or 2 , i cant remember and not sure if i like them or just like that its not stock .

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't like the 91/92 2-piece lights? Mainly because of the amber section in them.

I'd either convert the amber to red or, more likely, sell them.

 

The amber is barely visible. The Trans Am always had the coolest tail lights and by far the 91-92 style is the hottest of the bunch.

 

I'd hardly call the amber "barely visible', when it is OBVIOUS, even in pics over the internet. And hottest is personal opinion, not fact. And then lit up, they become even more obvious. I love my all red tails.

Your making me want a set, just so I do the amber to red conversion & aggravate people! But alas....I'd enjoy the $ from selling them much more so.....

Yeah it shows up when there's sunlight shining on them. I've been walking past a set, several times everyday for the last 2 months. I hardly ever notice the color of the internal lenses.

Isn't nearly everything stated by anyone on this forum opinion rather then hard fact? It wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit if you modified a set to all red. But maybe someone?

 

I like the 91-92 tails but what bothers me really isn't the amber it's the center section that has the gap down the middle. If the gap wasn't so large it would look 10x better, similar to the 4th gen LT1 Formula tails.

 

LOL, everyone is definitely entitled to their opinion. When I got my first car at 16, an 89 2.8 firebird, I loved the trans am tail lights and always wanted to change mine. 16 years later I have an 89 GTA with the tails I always wanted. Now after seeing the 91's I am eager to put them on! They look sweet on the red car above in their natural color. My GTA is all black and the 91 tails I got are DARK smoked and no color can be seen on themuntil they are lit up. I will post pics when I can. I like to hear both For and Against comments. Good for discussion!

 

I did that a few years ago, but then I stripped the red translucent paint back off and returned the directional back to the stock amber color because I liked it better. Its very easy to do, just take apart the taillight cover (don't pull too hard because of the protective weather sealant), pull the lense out, then paint. Takes about 15 minutes to do....

 

Just got the lights in today. They look awesome. I will post pics soon.

 

I know this is an old post, but I want to put a set of these on my 84 T/A. The lights have already been modded to the later 80's honycomb style and because I'm now in England, I am required to have "amber" turn signals. I don't at the moment but I'm certain it's only a matter of time until I get busted by the cops and get a stupid 100-pound ($160.00) fine.

 

How hard were yours to put in? Any real difficulties or was it just rewiring? I know that on mine, both lighs blink on the left when I turn on the left signal.

 

I like them, but p sell them too expensive for me. They remind me of Fiero tail lights.

 

Not hard at all, it is just the wiring harness, and even that can be rewired to make them work correctly. When I got mine I took them apart and painted the amber portion red because I was using the stock taillight harness. Ran them that way for awhile, then a member here sold me the correct wiring harness for the 91/92 GTA, and so I returned it back to the amber. I liked them when I was running them that way, but as fate would have it a buddy of mine needed them for his 92 GTA, so I returned mine to the stock ones. I'm thinking about throwing another set that I have on my '84 as well....
