Hey guys, I have a 1989 iroc and I'm wondering everyone's opinion on mud flaps. Oh and I am looking for pictures as well so if you have them on your car or know of any, send 'em to me! lol. This may cut this thread off short, but do mudflaps work with the stock ground effects? If not then I won't even waste my time lol. But thanks everyone!

 

People give me a hard time for mine, but it helps prevent stone chips on the side of the car. The ones I have on the car now are GM flaps with the "Z28" logo on them. I've got a couple sets of unopened GM "IROC-Z" flaps that I may put on soon... I dunno. I don't really drive the car enough for it to matter at this point.

A lot of people don't like em, personally I don't mind the hard plastic molded ones. I really don't know if I will put them on my car or not, I'm really concerned about rock chips when I put 295/50R/16s on the rear. I've got a lot of friends that live down gravel roads and we like to have "fun" bookin it to their houses. I know that I'm gunna have to go slow once I get my car painted but it's gunna be hard since one of my buddys is a late model dirt track racers (we like to have fun). Lol I think mudflaps would really help me out.

One thing that I've heard about, if your concerns about rock chips, is having a clear vinyl wrap put on the rear quarter of your car. Just a thought if you dint want mud flaps

 

I'm thinking about getting these hard plastic ones. On my car I can see stone/road dirt damage on fenders behind wheels. Not a whole lot but I am going to have car repainted and don't want to ruin it. Sure car looks better without them but these wouldn't be to obtrusive. Maybe you could paint them to match red color of your car?

My 87 Iroc has "IROCZ" mud flaps that probably date back to the early 90's. They don't look all that bad, I honestly forget they're there 90% of the time. They sort of disappear in the wheel well with the tires. But they really don't do anything since the tires are wider then the flaps, and the ground effects would take most of the abuse anyway.

My 83 Coupe had a set of "CAMARO" mud flaps. I can't say they did much good. The front tires still threw up rocks, they just didn't hit the areas shielded by the flaps. It still got rock chips, just further back on the door and rocker panels. They were more obvious and were a constant obstacle when washing the car.

Most of the other thirdgens I've owned have had the tell tale signs of mud flaps. Either holes in the wheel wells, or what was left of the flaps. Like one flap, or pieces of flaps still screwed to the fender, etc. Again, the holes from the mounting screws and the rust from the unprotected holes caused more damage then the flaps prevented. Not to mention that on some cars they look REALLY goofy. On the cars which really benefit from having them, they look really out of place and mess with the lines. To get flaps large enough to protect from the tread of 245/50's they'd have to be the huge 4x4 flaps anyway.

 

Yeah, I know they look amazing on the second gens but i never seen them on the 3rds before, thanks a bunch for everyone's input! if you have any more pictures to make up my mind (perferably shots from the back end) i would greatly appreciate it

 

I only put them on the back, I dislike them on the front, and it protects the paint, they were quite expensive.

 

Personally I am not a fan - I seriously doubt that I will ever put a set on my Z.

I have seen them done where they actually look pretty good, but ONLY on the rear like what "musclecar201" has & the molded ones look decent as well... Just like so many things with these cars it's all about personal taste - if you like it and in this case it actually offers some protection, then go for it!

 

My 91 rs had them on it when I bought it. I pulled them off as soon as I got the car home for the first time.

 

3M makes something called Rock-Gard. Its A heavy duty clear plastic film that can go on the back side of your rear fender/ ground effects to help prevent rock chips. I think Ive even seen it at Advanced Auto parts. Never used it but it looks interesting.

 

hey man it is YOUR CAR . if you drive in a place where it would benefit from having them then do it. i dont need them since mine is in the garage 80% of the time. put them on there if YOU like them. it is yours. heck man when i was young all i cared about was going fast. that hasnt all gone away but no have a fond appreciation for looks.

 

I've thought about using the clear vinyl-style rock guard stick-on stuff, or making me a set out of clear plexiglass/lexan to protect the paint, yet be "invisible" unless they were dirty.

But my paint isn't good enough for me to worry about anyways, so I haven't done anything.

 

Thanks guys! yeah I'm leaning against it b/c im puttin a ram air hood on mine with tinted windows (rear hatch included) blakout taillight and neon haha...i think it will contrast a little too much with old school muscle. but i do think they look good on the back, thanks for the pic!

 

With mine I am doing two tone; black on top and atomic orange on the bottom, ss hood with atomic orange on the sides, blacked out stock 91-92 rims with 245/50r/16s front and 295/50r/16s rear, tinted windows 20% sides 5% rear, ive got blacked out tailights and markers with VHT Nightshade, cyberdyne digital gauges, flip out dvd player, 2-12" subwoofers, 10pc Orange LED kit(underbody+interior with lights in my grill and hood scoop) and a lot more!! And I am really considering using black hard plastic rock guards aka molded plastic mud flaps on my car(rear only) to prevent rock chips on my new paint from the 12" wide rear tires. I really dont think that they would be that noticeable either.

like people have said its all a matter of what you think, me im doing it because i dont think it will stand out all that much with the black rims and FOR PROTECTION(rear only).
