Hell, last winter in the camaro, I was going down the highway in 3 inches of snow and passed 3 jeep cherokees in the ditch on a 15 minute drive home.

I always thought the car looked like a Sunfire or Cavalier. Its the side that makes me think of them. Frt seems more like the grand prix.

Its gotten to the point where everyone and their brother who makes cars makes at least one SUV. People are hopefully going to realize soon that they aren't just big minivans, they're trucks with more doors and seats. They consume gas like trucks, and corner like trucks. But, lets hope the Chicago auto show back in feb. is a sign of the times. Naturally there were lots of concept cars, as with any major auto show. Guess what? There was the hummer H2, some big dodge, and the concept truck that led to the ford super duty. Thats all. The rest were mostly 2 door roadsters, there was at least 5 of these plus some amped-up versions of current models, especially from pontiac.

But by far my favorite cars...the Dodge Razor and the Mitsubishi 7000. Blastphamy, I know! Maybe it was the orange metallic paint they were both sporting, but I was really drawn to them. Go figure. I never wanted to like an import nor do I have faith in Dodge, but those 2, wow!
I think GM needs to take some cues from them. Right now there is not a single GM car that really impresses me. I absolutely hate the new hummer 2. They ruined the hing. Everything I liked about the original is gone. They took the wide stable body and made it skinny and to me it looks tippy. I hope they do bring back the f-body, or my next car, when mine becomes show only, will be the Razor.
I heard they pulled the f-body because of sales & because of the new safety standards. The had to add all the airbags and extra padding and it was just not going to be easy to do to the existing body. So they would have to do a total redesign. I bet that is what is was and that they figured if they took it away for a few years they could create a new demand and sell the crap out of them this year. Then bring them back with all the hype in a few years. I thik they would have been beter off to make them a limited production car instead, but $ talks.

Pontiac has often had sales troubles with Trans-AMs. Chevy somtimes has low sales numbers for the Camaro. In fact the Mustang outsells them about 3 or 4 to 1. GM has said before that the Trans-AM and the Camaro are "niche" cars. They have never nor ever should be produced for the masses. Few people look for that kind of vehicle. And right now the "niche" just isn't worth it for them. I think that GM just didn't have a redesign ready for 2003. The Trans-AM is a dated design and just needs a revamp. Hopefully GM makes the right decision and they bring it back improved.

In one of the last issues of Car craft they went and checked out the new hot vehicles from GM. Sorry to say but the impression was GM was going the domestic rice route and was going to see about the success of the new GTO to determine if they will end the Camaro's hiatus.
In terms of the word hiatus, the TV show The A-team went on hiatus in 1987....

gm weinies
im willing to bet that gm wasn't losing any money producing and selling f-bodies. it was just a matter of their resources "better spent" producing suv's which makes them more money total.
what a bunch of horse-crap.
you know bmw makes their z8 model at NO PROFIT! they make them, and then sell them at the price it took to produce them! what an idea.. anyone feeling inspired (ahem GM!!!)

Some companies may sell a car at cost, but they're still gonna make hella money off of it. Take that aforementioned z3. The person that buys it will most likely finance it. They've made money on the loan. They'll have it serviced at the dealer, more money there. They'll only be using genuine BMW parts, even more dough. They'll probably like it so much that they'll buy another BMW down the line, and now BMW is making mucho bucks off somebody buying an M5. Microsoft does the same thing with Xbox. They lose money on ever console, but will make it up in licensing for games. They figure if everybody has one, the game manufacturers will be forced to buy a license cause that's where the market is. While that strategy might work for a car like a corvette, I don't think it'd work with an f-body. A vette owner (and I don't mean to stereotype, but I think this can kinda be assumed) is more likely to leave the car stock and have the dealership service it as opposed to an f-body owner. That camaro/firebird owner will either do the work themselves, mod the hell out of it so that the dealer wouldn't want to work on it anyway, or else have a private shop work on it.
You have to remember that GM is a publicly traded company, so ultimately the only ppl they care about are the stockholders. So if they were gonna save more by being able to close their canadian plant where f-bodies were produced as opposed to still selling them, then there wouldn't be any second thoughts about it. The auto manufacturers today really don't give a crap about tradition or the cars that have become American icons. Unless of course they can get that retro styling to sell a boatload of cars.
