Exhaust Cleaning

I have a full Hooker Exhaust kit on my camaro. Most of the pipes have some rust and i've tried getting it off with rust remover but nothing seems to work. Is their any other way to remove the rust and bring back the chrome shine they had?

Re: Exhaust Cleaning

you might try a roll of that 1500 grit sandpaper with lots of water. use the long strip thats the tear off kind and wrap it half way around the pipes then pull it back and forth kinda like buffing a shoe. other than that steel will inevitably rust. you will need to coat it with either ceramic header paint or it will eventually rust again.

Sorry but there isint an easy way to have a chrome like shine on exhaust without spending tons on a stainless system then buffing it out. most all coatings or rust preventatives will burn off of hot exhaust tubes. thos that dont usualy have a rather flat finish.

Re: Exhaust Cleaning

I don't know anything about them except that their hooker exhaust, X piped, and have 4 heads out the back. 2 on left 2 on right. They had a metal color till i tried some chrome polisher and that made a huge difference! But a lot of rust is still caked on there. I tried steel wool but that didn't work, i tried some sand paper and some came off. I'll post some pics of the pipes if you want.

I havent cleaned headers but with my chrome exhaust pipes I used a crunched up ball of aluminum foil and some coca cola. It works alot better then the leading chrome cleaner. Plus it removed all the rust! The coke helps with removing the rust as it is sort of acidic (thats why it rots your teeth!) and the aluminum foil brings out the ions or something to remove the rust and bring out the shine of the chrome! Oh it gets kind od sticky so when you are done you might want to rinse them off unless you like the smell of burning coke!

Re: Exhaust Cleaning

I would recommend just taking them off and sending them to Jet Hot coatings. It's a night and day difference (both in appearance and under-hood temps.)

Re: Exhaust Cleaning

A light/medium steel wool probably would have worked the best. I use it to get the carbon builld up off of my exhaust tips.

Re: Exhaust Cleaning

Well I don't have the money to get them taken off and sent to be cleaned. I got some of the metal color off but it doesn't seem to stay chrome for a whole week. It gets dirty again in a few days. And now i just realized that my tips are covered in black stuff on the inside. I'm assuming its obviously from the exhaust fumes.
