Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
I did it without using any fiberglass as well. I used clear silicone to hold the projector to the housing, nothing more. There's more than one way to skin a cat though.

The way I did it was to drill2 holes through the housings and use some existing threaded holes in the projector housings to affix a screw/spacer combo to, then fill in all the openings/gaps with black RTV silicone/adhesive.

They work extremely well but if I had it to do over again I would have gotten the Morimoto H1 style projectors. The large and oddball shape of the D2S versions warranted cutting out a large square opening in the fiberglass header panel and I even had to use a carbide bit to put a small 1/2" notch in the core support.
Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
Disconnected my Halo's.
They finally started to **** me off enough to where I wished I had never put them on. Defiantly don't fit a thirdgen and I wouldn't suggest it to anyone.
Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
I didn't want them either, they seem too BMW'ish for me. I never got around to installing the driver side HID on my car, but I do plan to finish the install this weekend and finally wire it up. The car is in running condition again so I have a lot of motivation to finish everything up this weekend.

Really? I didn't have to do any of that on my '84. I used the D2S Morimoto mini's and yeah, they slid right in and seated perfectly.

Also... what shrouds did you use? I'm building my 3rd pair of headlights haha, and these are gonna be all black like yours, I just can't decide on a shroud.
Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
What other option are out there for our cars?
I love the extra brightness you get from the HID's but absolutely hate the look you get when theyre off ( circles )
Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
I have thought for hours about how to take away that "jonny 5" effect but I havn't been able to see a way around it using an HID projector.
Other options would be:
Ebay H4 housing w/ HID kit (not recommended)
Sylvania Silverstars seem to be popular and I can personally say that they are the best sealed beam option.
Drive around with your brights on (also not recommended)
HID kit in the fog lights for while driving alone. (why not just use brights)
Any other thoughts on this?

Believe it or not I used no shrouds. I didn't like the way they looked crammed into the small 4x6 housing. I removed the plastic lens holder from the projector, carefully took out the lens and painted it with the same gloss black/clear I used on the inside of the housings. Everything got baked in the oven to properly cure the paint.
Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
Also, since these are high/lo projectors, I have been toying with the idea of fabbing up a second set for the inner highbeams only using a 55 watt HID kit and running it to a factory IROC foglight switch. Kind of a "country road only" thing.

My first thought would be, alot. Had TONS of PM's about making these. Probably start a new FS thread with pics.
And that is one HELL of a picture!! Gooood looking car!! Did you black your front markers or are they actually missing in the picture? lol
You actually need a male H4656 for the low beam connector on the relay harness but they dont offer it. If I recall, I used spade clips to connect my harness. Easy and cheap. No hacking up the wiring incase I ever wanted to return to stock.

I blacked them out however I am going to grab another set from the yard and redo them. I got carried away used WAAAY too much nightshades.
My original intention was to have them appear black in the day but light up well at night. You can barely see the light shining through them even at night. If I'm coming towards you with the headlights on forget about it you will see absolutely nothing.
BTW my friend said the same thing. He said it looks like they're part of the bumper where a pair of badges should go. Lol.
Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
Well, as I said earlier, the Halo's bugged me more and more and I finally took them out and made another set of REAL D2S projectors for the hi beams. I took the cutout plate out of the hi beam projectors and they work great.
Made black shrouds out of a peice of ABS plastic I got off ebay for like 5$. I have my other ones if anyone wants them.
Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
wow... you are a crafty person haha. I have halos on mine now and yeah... they're starting to bug me more and more. I've made a few different sets of headlights since my first ones. This is my current setup now, The "brights" on my driver side is being used as a Ram Air funnel haha.

I prefer Kensun off of amazon over DDM mainly for their customer support. I had a ballast go out with each company and DDM wanted me to send back the bad ballast in order to send me a new one. Kensun just sent me a new ballast, no questions asked. I also got a light from Kensun that had a slight crack in the plastic and they sent me a new bulb right away. I also ordered a second set of bulbs from DDM that were 4300K vs 5000K because the 5000k were really blue and i wanted crystal white,THEY WERE THE SAME BULB! Kensun's 5000k are actually white and not blue.

H4 bulb and you can get 4500k or 5000k for a crisp white 6000k max for hint of blue. you will need new housings like autopal, hella...ect. this set up with the properly shielded bulb is a good upgrade over stock and doesn't blind oncoming traffic when aimed correctly
Re: In our search for superior exterior illumination... (HID Projector Retrofit)
Has anyone considered using the jeweled/textured glass that's found on the regular sealed beams with the HIDs? Might give it a more factory appearance. I'm not sure how it would alter the way the light gets directed, however. It's gotta be better than HIDs in halogen housings, though.
