Painting T-top Trim

Greetings,

I am looking for some advice to refinish the outer trim piece on my t-tops. The black is starting to sun bleach and discolor, turn to a grayish color. If i used a rattle can, would it turn out ok, what color is close to original and would i need to use some type of primer first. Thanks in advance.

I used a product called Black Satin. You used to be able to buy it at the parts store. It's in a white can with black lettering and has a photo of a red Fiero on the front.

Hello there. I have done a ton of trim work on my camaro and I always use the same method. I will be painting my t roof trim pieces as well as they have some small scratches. First I use steel wool, making sure to scuff the entire area to be painted, then I wash and rinse the area thoroughly with soap and water. After it dries out I mask the piece to be painted and then paint it with a gm trim black or satin black paint. This stuff works really good and makes even my work look pretty professional. I found the biggest thing is making sure your prep is good....I mean lets face it, if the surface is dirty when you paint the paint job is gonna look brutal, but if you take your time and do it right it will look incredible. I am thinking of doing mine today. If I do I will share pictures or at least video.

Re: Painting T-top Trim

Thanks for the advice. I just find it odd that the center trim piece is perfect, but each T-top is extremely faded.

Re: Painting T-top Trim

alot of times people lean on those strips and with time that can fade them, whereas the center bar has little to no contact with anything looks like new. (:

I did mine w/ a rattlecan. I used Rustoleum Auto primer and the I think I used a semi-gloss black. I sanded them down with 220, then primered them. 2 coats. Sanded the primer w/ 220 and then sprayed 3 coats with the paint. I waited for the last coat to dry and then sanded it w/ 400. Mine turned out really nice.

I used Krylon fusion about 2 year ago, and they held up so far. It's a satiny finish.
