TUTORIAL: Refurbishing Metal Hatch & T-Top Painted trim

06/21/11

Both my hatch trim and t-top bar (top portion) need some serious attention. I had seen Rick Bacon do this quickly and easily on the TV show 'Musclecar' two years ago and after extensive internet searching, I was finally able to find the episode so that I can do this today. Here's the episode and the process begins at the 3:00 mark. I'll post before and after photos of mine once done.

I finished it with pleasing results. It took me a few hours, which included multiple coats/drying of both primer and paint. Masking off the area is quite time consuming (especially if you do it outside with a slight breeze blowing the newspaper). I also experienced some minor overspray which I discovered after the job was done. No big deal; I'll use a razor for the back glass and some compound for the roof. I slightly modified the materials list you saw on the video to this:
  • Newspaper for masking (free)
  • Blue 'painters tape' ($1.00 a roll at the dollar store)
  • Rustoleum 'rust converter' spray (under 5 bucks @ auto parts store)
  • Rustoleum 'bumper & trim spray' (under 5 bucks @ auto parts store)
  • Norton wet/dry 400 grit paper (5 sheets for about 5 bucks)
  • 3M gray scotch pad (yellow was out of stock-gray is next coursest)

I was just looking at mine yesterday and thinking it needs something done to it. Good job.

Bluezee28, I like what you did with the sides of the T-tops. When I get around to the t-top glass itself (as you can see, my interior needs to be finished first) I'm going to use your photo example for masking. I was actually looking for previous threads here but I was focusing on the hatch trim. Either way, hopefully we help others out with our threads.
