Repainted Engine Bay $20

Decided to redo my engine bay to make it look a lil better since it couldnt really get any worse. Paint, steel wool and tape was all I used and actually ended up really good for what I thought it was going to look like. For $20, Ill take the result. Sorry I dont have a before picture Thought I had one when I started.

Re: Repainted Engine Bay $20

I'm very interested in a detailed write-up on how you did this...my engine bay needs much attention and I just bought 4 cans of white to spray my wheels...but I think now my engine bay might need it a little more to match the new paint on the outside. Looks fantastic!

Materials-
2000 Degree Duplicolor engine paint.
3M masking tape
Steel Whool

Process-
1) Disconnect Battery and Remove Battery (Sparks with vapor= bad) and remove the coolant box and washer fluid box (Mine doesnt work and removed it completely)
2) Mask off any wires that are in the way, remove if possible.
3_ Use the whool to remove rust and rough of the surface for paint to stick.
4) Cover the engine and wipers with a towel along with front bumper
and fenders (Overspray protection)
4) Shake can and appy coats to cover up rust, scratches, etc.
5) Let try for about an hour, Use a fan for faster drying time

Any questions, feel free to ask.

I thought I had a good shot of it before but it turns out I didnt. Rust, Scraches, overspray from a previous repaint and battery acid were all there.

Re: Repainted Engine Bay $20

Looks a LOT better man, nice work!

I'm actually just starting this same little project myself. I'm REALLY paranoid about overspray, so I will be taping off/covering EVERYTHING that is exposed that I don't want painted. The entire car is being taped off, plus I will be painting pieces around the front black (windshield wiper arms since they are fading, top of firewall below windshield, etc). I am also painting the underside of the hood. I am using Duplicolor Victory Red, Universal Black, and a LOT of Duplicolor clear to give it a shine. Materials cost me roughly $35 with the utilization of $25 in online coupons from Advance Auto.

Not trying to threadjack, I'll make my own thread for this, but here is the car as it sits (just beginning taping things off):

Re: Repainted Engine Bay $20

87IROCZCamro - Nice job! Looks cleaner for sure. It does look a little whiter than the rest of the body, but it should blend in better over time.

plasmeh - I gotta ask...why bother taping off the entire hood? Just mark it at the hinges and take it off. With what you're describing on doing, removing it will give you much more access anyway. No??

I am also painting the underside of the hood.

Re: Repainted Engine Bay $20

Good point. The hood will be removed, I just started taping it off on the car. Overspray is the enemy. Better safe than sorry.

I need to paint my wiperblade shield thing black too. It has over spray from the previous owner on there.

No. The rust was already a lost cause and the bay needs to be redone one day but for now this is what I can up with. It looks cleaners then it does before. It had overspray all over the bay before and now its a clean white. Its different then the car but idc

Re: Repainted Engine Bay $20

One thing to add. I also did this a while back for the second time. The first time was with everything out. But i used some cheap cheap paint and it dulled out and faded (black) within a year. One thing that i used that made it easier to mask things off, i used tin foil on somethings because it easily wraps around things and can be formed. Just a little tip for some of you going to do this also.

Great tip, thanks alot.I'm in the process of an engine swap and I planned on painting the engine compartment before the new engine goes in.That will work good because I won't have to remove the trans cooler lines or the fuel lines now.All thanks to tin foil.
