I saw that too & question the baking heat & the sheetmetal body. Could it really stand up to that heat without any warping occurring? I know the older cars are much thicket steel than our 3rd gen "aluminum" thin sheetmetal, so maybe that is why they could do it to that car on TV?

Re: powder coating as paint job??
the warping ect would not be the issue I am a powdercoater and have coated some weird things like a hat yes a hat it worked
BUT 400 degrees for 15 to 45 minutes whatever cant handle that needs to be out then once its done it will look good but any imperfection or scrap chip ect you have to start from square on it is very hard to blend or repair powdercoating
there are ways to get powder to stick to not electric items some polymers we will spraypaint a zinc paint that will help the surface charge

What about body filler? Not gonna have a 100% straight metal body nor 100% straight fiberglass or urethane parts. So.....Can body filler be powder coated? I guess with that zinc spray stuff it could huh?
And yeah.....Where are you gonna find an oven big enough to cook a whole car body?

as for ovens thats not an issue at all most powdercoating places can very easily accommodate a whole car they will do car frames alot so a car is not much more
BTW most fire engines and heavy equipment are powdercoated because they can afford and expect scratches ect and once its no good they just paint over it

There are also low temp cure powders that don't require the 400-450 temperature though, they seem not quite as durable.

the low temps cure around 350 and regular powder cures at 375 (substate temp) for 15 min so when the actual part reaches 375 15 min cure you need 400 to get a part to 375 roughly

Re: powder coating as paint job??
I suppose I should have specified low temp polyester powder which has a 250 cure (substrate temp) @30mins since there are quite a variety of powder types and cure temps/times.

Re: powder coating as paint job??
A friend of mine had built a roadster a few years back and powder coated all the body panels. It was tough but for some reason had bad orange peel on all of the body panels. I think it was tough to heat large panels well enough to cure the powder coat.
