Need help getting rid of stuborn brake dust
Hey guys a few months ago I swapped on a set of c6 vette wheels onto my '91 T/A but this past week I had a slider on my rear caliper sieze up on me of course wearing through the pad and bringing it down to metal and coating my wheels in brake dust.
I washed the car and cleaned the wheels but the one that the caliper lock up on was being a pain. I soaked it in some Purple Power for about 5 or 10 min and tryed to wipe it clean with the rag I washed the car with and it made no difference. I did the samething again but this time used a wet Scotchbrite pad and it took off more but not a lot. Going for something stronger I used a Scotchbrite and some old gas and it took off a little more but after awhile it wasn't doing much and the wheel still has a rusty looking stains on it. I tried for about 30 to 45 min to get this thing clean.
Any ideas on what I might be able to use to get rid of this stuff?
Heres a pic of whats stuck on the wheels

It's probably set into the clearcoat on the wheels. If polishing compound doesn't work, next step would be rubbing compound but you'd probably be through the factory clearcoat by then. There isn't a lot on factory wheels. Strip/refinish time.

Thanks guys I'll give those a shot and see what happens and iansane I was thinking that a polishing or rubbing compound might have to be my next step. Although if I have to strip them and paint them I guess I'll finally have the excuse to paint them charcoal grey like yours because when I got them that was my plan but then I put them on and left them lol.

I stumbled across this stuff a month or two ago. I've never heard of it until then. I'm wondering how well it really works.

Re: Need help getting rid of stuborn brake dust
Have you tried a can of good 'ol non-chlorinated brake cleaner... I have used that on multiple factory wheels and remove set in brake dust. At this point you have nothing to lose. I know some people will chime in and say it will hurt your finish, but you clear coat is already pitted... hence the brake dust stuck in the pits.
You might be pleastly surprised.

Re: Need help getting rid of stuborn brake dust
Ok I tried the non-chlorinated brake cleaner since I already had some in the garage and that didn't touch it at all :-/ I'll give the goof off a shot seeing as how I need some to get sap off of another car that I'm building. But I was also wondering if anyone thinks maybe a clay bar would work?
Thanks for the input guys I really appreciate it, hopefully I can get rid of this stuff soon.

Re: Need help getting rid of stuborn brake dust
Its just clearcoat on aluminum. Aftermarket companies sell raw aluminum wheels all the time. You may have to polish it a couple of times a year to keep oxidation in check but it's not the worst thing in the world.
I would take some polishing compound, then rubbing->polishing compound, then fine grade steel wool->rubbing->polishing and if all that didnt work, 1000 grit, then rubbing->polishing compound.
If you want to reclear them you can, but most people you see rolling around with polished thirdgen wheels are running without clearcoat, it's not a huge deal as long as you dotn just ignore them for years. Even if you do that, getting them shiny again is just a matter of 600grit-> 1000 grit->rubbing->polishing compound for an hour. Not really a big deal to me.
