driving my car in winter:: how can I protect it

Is there anything I can do or put on(wax or something) so that my wheels and chrome tips don't rust. I hate driving in winter, but my firebird is all I got. And, does anyone have any tricks to keeping your windows thawed out, so theres no ice on them when you get in it in the morning(like some sort of heater that you plug in and put inside your car or on the window). Please just give me some tricks to keeping my car in good shape during the winter? thanx

I second that... wash it often... the underside and in the wheel wells is the most important. Before it started getting cold, I thoroughly washed the bottom of my car then coated it with that paint that is supposed to turn existing rust into a hard compound and protect the parts from further rust... I was too lazy to put undercoat on... I will recoat it in the summer and put undercoat ontop for next winter... this will make the car good for probably 3 or 4 years... then I'll repeat the process etc etc etc. should be practically perpetual.

putting on a good coat of wax will be good, and wash it wash it wash it! every time it gets any salt or crap on it go right to the car wash, i knew a guy at a gas station so i washed the car allmost every day and it still rusted a bit after winter, depending on where your at winter is allways a horrible experience for older cars.

I live in Michigan where our state motto is "Burrrrrrr."
Get mudflaps. Seriously, they may look *******, but I see rear drive cars of all kinds that rust the back fenders like crazy. Better to let the salt hit the mudflaps than the fenders. Then take them off in the spring.

If you can, stick to main roads and if you have to drive in the morning, try to make it late morning instead of earlier because the salt trucks get out early, and a lot of it is gone by 9 or 10.

About your windows frosting over, I've never tryed those spray on anti frost compounds myself, but have never heard anything good about them. I bought a little electric heater for my Blazer winter car that seems to work pretty well. I point it towards the driver side of the windshield, so when I start it up in the morning, there's enough clear that I can drive away and not have to sit and defrost it with the regular defroster. Just make sure your alternator is in good shape because it draws mad current.

Good Luck.

Put some silicone or suitable lubricant on your weatherstrip where the windows meet it so you don't tear your weatherstrip to crap when you open your doors.
