A thirdgen for life? Or just a stepping stone?

Just wanted your opinions. I intend to keep the IROC for life, ever since the thirdgen was introduced it has been my dream car. It is one of the few shapes that hasn't really dated and can be immortilised by its 'modern muscle' status.

I find a lot of people just buy our cars just because they are cheap which annoys me in a way. I would keep my car over any other generation of Camaro, I personally think the thirdgens have the cleanest lines and the most aggressive look of all.

So is your thirdgen there for life? Or just a stepping stone on the road to your dream car?

Mine's a little of both. There are better cars out there, but they're not yet within reach. I will keep mine forever because no other vehicle past or present makes me feel the same way, but I hope to own some truely remarkable vehicle eventually as well.

When I was 7 years old I used to cut out pictures of thirdgen Zs from my dad's Autohunter catalog and tape them to my walls.

There are all kinds of cars that I love, and most of them are nicer than IROCs, but there's only one car that makes my eyes swell (and maybe my pants a little too ) and my heart rate go up when I see a nice, low-mile example at a car show.

I'll have my IROC forever. If something should happen to it, it'll be replaced with another IROC. My GTA is a stepping stone to a Corvette.

Hopefully I'll be keeping the IROC for life. I can remember loving thirdgens since I saw a perfect 91 or 92 Z28 black convertable near my house when I was about 11. I've always wanted a black IROC with T-tops and a 350, and I finally got it. So hopefully I'll be keeping it, and someday maybe get a thirdgen Trans Am.

I'm a lifer.... I mean, I fixed this:

Into what is now in my sig (and this mess is STILL not done). I have plans of an engine rebuild and the body still has some rough area to be re-done.

I've been a computer-geek all my life (hence my job that pays for my Z28).... I did not get into cars until I turned 17, and that was when I fell in love with the 3rd gens.

I remember working for a grociery store, pushing carts past an AWESOME car and at that time.... At that time, I did not reconize the makes/models. At that time, all I remember is that the door panels said "IROC". At that time I just thought a car like that was outta reach for a young guy like me. What little I knew then. I may not have the IROC, but my '84 Z28 makes me just as happy.

I don't want to ever get rid of my car, However, that's not to say I won't get other cars to make faster. I had the chance when I first got my car to trade it for my brother's El Camino, now this car was nasty (400sbc), ran very low 13s with wheel spin. And I'm all about going fast, looks come second. I kept my IROC and a couple of thousands of dollars later I'm still happy with it.
But will I keep it for ever, time will only tell, at the time I had 4 cars in less than 4 years. And only getting rid of one was my own choice.

Well, when I first started looking to buy a car I really was looking for a C3 Vette. I just love the shark style cars. I always liked firebirds too so I decided to go check out a 91 I saw in the local classifieds. I dunno, but there was just something about the car that I fell in love with. About a year later I bought (practically stole) another 91 only this one had t-tops. That's the one I'm using for my project car and I will definitely keep that one for life. I might get rid of my hardtop car if I ever find that good condition 82 Vette I've been looking for, but that won't be for a while. But definitely count me in as a "thirdgenner for life."

Well there are other cars I would like to ADD to my collection like a nice 'Vette or Lamberg...but I will NEVER EVER SELL MY CAMARO, unless I can get a better one like Mettali did. Can't even think of a reason to sell and besides that it is paid for.

Nice hood Maniac...

Long live the 3rd gen

I have other project cars (and trucks) that come and go, not to mention basic transportation vehicles to beat around in. I do a few things to one then send it down the road in search of something new to tweak on.
One that always hangs around and never goes anywhere is my IROC-Z. I've had it since the eighties, and have changed engine combos many times just for something to do. I'll have more new projects come and go (including more 4th gens) but the ROC won't be going anywhere in the forseeable future (except back under the wrench from time to time for more mods & upgrades).

i guess this is the point where man falls in love with car, buys car, and spends every penny of disposable income on car. i remember when i was about 5 years old (1987), our neighbor brought home an 87 iroc, 350, t-tops, everything. he took me for a ride in it one day, and i loved it. he let me sit behind the wheel on his lap and steer the wheel a little bit. ever since, i've wanted a thirdgen. currently, i'm going to try and keep my 84 for as long as possible, and eventually i want to find an 87 iroc 350 just like the one i rode in back in 1987. i'm going to try and keep thirdgens for life, and raise my kids the same way.

thirdgenner for life.

I have no intentions of getting rid of my car, but that's not to say I wouldn't. I don't think I could ever come close to getting what I've put in it, so I figure why sell it. Not worth the loss of money and hassel. Plus, it looks pretty good, and one day it'll run damn good. Right now it's a daily driver, but one day I'd like to see it has a play toy.

My dream car is a C5 as of right now...waiting to see the C6 they better do damn good. But the way I look at it, if I can afford a C5, I can afford to keep my 91.

Life. I'll most likely end up buying a 91-92 Firehawk eventually instead of a new car (same price but more power) but I'll keep my GTA for atleast another 10 years, I can't really imagine what would make me sell it but alot can happen in 10 years. I'll always be a 3rd gen lover, have for 10 years, will be til I'm dead. I'd like to someday have all of these:

My 1992 GTA in concours condition
1992 Trans Am 'vert Firehawk (1 made, yeah fat chance of owning this I know)
1992 Yellow GTA with T-Tops (possible, only 1 made though)
1984 15th Anniversary (very possible)

That's not to many is it

I don't want to offend anyone, but I will be selling my Camaro maybe in '03. I want a 70-72 Chevelle more than anything. My first car was a 72, and I totaled it into a tree at 16. I have a lot of plans right now, and selling the car, to buy another project won't fit in those plans until next year.

They don’t make these things anymore!! Why would you sell? If I get another car I'll consider it adding to the collection.

I'm in it for the long haul. i used to be a mopar fan, due mainly to Richard Petty. My last mopar, a 66 charger, was just trashed, needed complete restoration. I wanted something affordable, and would perform well, and would run on pump gas. So i sold the charger and bought an 85 z-28. It wasn't exactly what I wanted (IROC-Z) but close. Then the 87 IROC came along and I sold the 85 and bought the 87. Hopefully in a few years i'll be in a position to own more than one of these cars. I've collected all the third gen promo models available and, built 1/24, 1/25, 1/16, and 1/8th scale replica models of my cars, and bought all the books I could find on third gen camaros.

I will admit that GM cars are better than Chrysler cars.

I will probably stay with my Trans Am for llife(hopefully)do a complete restore.
I think the third gen's look a lot better than the 4th gens.
But I would probably give it up to get my 69 Dodge charger back.

The only way I'll ever let go of my car is if it was totalled or if an IROC came along at a price I could handle

yea that charger kicks! i plan on keeping my thirdgen forever. all my friends, when they see a firebird they think of me, i love em!! i plan to upgrade the hell out of the 6 cylinders i have. i plan on getting an 8 cylinder and putting a 350 in and make it look like GT Autos w/ out the flames so i can use my 6 cyl car as a daily driver. dont plan on ever driving either in winter though, for a winter beater car i want one of those new haundi cars (i dunno the name of it, its not the elantra, they look sweet) or maby i might drive "the enemy" for the winter, newer model rustang, i dont care how bad they are in the winter... i want a cool car year round.

this should be a poll...

3rd gen 4life
or
steping stone

PS: IROCThe5.7L love your sig! looks very intimidating

How many times have I seen someone on here say they'd keep their car forever, but the minute it breaks down or gets in a wreck you see a post stating they intend to sell it? Before any of you make that commitment verbally, maybe you should take those possiblities into consideration.. I've seen em chasing some mechanical gremelin or electrical poltergeist for one day and one part too many and get fed up and sack the car.

Funny how true that is. It's easy to commit with a car that runs perfect. I mean, sure you can off it whenever you want (it's your car).

Personally, I think I've proved my current commitment. I've had it rebuilt after a major accident. Replaced most if not all the interior. New floor pans. And I plan on an engine rebuild in a few years (to rid my Z of some of the quarks in it due to age) and doing a FULL body restore.
I think based on what I've done with it to date proves my dedication. I have too much money wrapped into my baby (and the money in her FAR exceeds any listed value for her).

There is ONE and only ONE way my Z28 will ever leave my ownership and that is if she is ever destroyed in an auto accident that would not be practical to repair (that's when she probably would become a parts car for my next 3rd gen).

Not trying to preach but I agree with Jza's comment. It one thing to "say" your committed, it's another to prove it....

When I first saw the movie Better off dead when I was a kid and seen that black 67 camaro, I always wanted a car like that. My first real personal experiance was driving a rented 97 rs convertible back in 98. After that, i just truely fell in love with camaros. My fiance and I bought our first camaro in Oct. of 99. It was a black 89 camaro rs with t-tops. We were just getting on our feet after haveing nothing and us both being teenagers anyway. "I" put a decent amount of "our" money into it with rims and stereos systems, tint and so on. She wasn't happy with the money thing. I still wanted a convertible though, and surely enough about a year later in Nov of 00 I won my teal 91 rs convertible off ebay. Once again I put more money into this car with a whole new suspension and stereo polished rims, paint, and so on. But I still wanted a 97 rs convertible. Surely enough, another year later being Oct. 01, I won my WRECKED 97 rs convertible for $3k. I sold my black camaro in Nov, and now I'm not sure about keeping my 91 rs convertible. One reason would be for the money issue, and 2 would be having 2 convertibles. Well, here's my issues. Here's some pics also.

I completely get what u guys are saying and how u feel. Thats how I will be with the IROC-Z28 I want and have been looking for. The RS is just there until I find it. I'm even like that with the RS in many ways. Its IROC-Z for me though.

I've already had two thirdgens so far (87 305 SC) and my IROC I have now. I love thirdgen camaro's and birds and think they are very mean and agressive looking cars. However at this point in my life If I had the chance to get a nice 87 Grand National my IROC would most likely get sold. I would of course like to get another nice thirdgen somewhere down the road. IMO the grand national is what I look for most in a car..raw power and aggressive styling.

I am 16 and i got my 83 Z-28 just a couple a months ago and even tho it get hit and the whole front end is smashed the week i had it made me relealize i will keep it forever. after its repared it will be my baby and in the future i plan to get an IROC to keep as a collectable. Ever since i was 13 i wanted a third gen and nothing else. i thought i changed my mind when i was 15 and almost bought a 72 javelin just like my friends but i passed that and reliezed i was stupid and got the camaro. this summer i still plan to get a 70 amx because i can get a great one for cheap i know a lot of people in the amc world. All i know is my third gens are far more important than any other cars. as long as im making money every penny is going into new and better third gens

Call me crazy but I'd consider trading my car for a '96 Red T/A Ram Air WS6, 6 Speed, Leather interior, semi-low milage, with the spoiler the style of mine. Kinda like this car below. But I do love my car and I do want to keep it forever. I guess it depends on my moods the day I decide to make a choice.

But then again what crazy owner of one of them would want to trade for my car?

I'm on the fence, i really really want a 68 or 69 camaro ss.I know that will be in a few years.I just dont care for all the computer stuff and lack of room in the engine compartments and cant get a true dual exhaust under there. When you lift the hood and see everything it kinda blows ya away, i like the older days when you could sit inside under the hood and work on a car without having a scanner and such. But i know the cars arent made anymore and i enjoy mine for now.

Car: 1991 Formula (sold)
quoted by MANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will Never sell, "NEVER" say "NEVER" or its as good as sold, been there done that. Now I dont say that word at all. This is good advice for the younger members, trust me on this one

I'm going to shock you guys I'm a Mopar man 1st, I've had my share of them plus 3 other 2nd Gens T/As, loved them all. But there sometime about this GTA that has appeal, I mean I really dig this car. Allot more than any other of my Mopars or 2nd Gens. Except maybe the 340 4spd Cuda I've had, or the 79 10th silver ann car (had WAY tooo many good times in that car)

I going to keep this car and add to my collection, I'm at I point in my life where I don't need to sell as in the past. I hope this trend continue.

Life is good, if you are good

I guess I'll have mine for life cause that's probably how long it will take me to get it like I want it!!! Although if my brother-in-law was willing to trade me for my 72 Camaro back...

I've spent way too much time and money, and put too much effort into my car to ever sell it. It hasn't been running in over a year (due to lack of money and time), but I never get frustrated with it to the point I want to get rid of it. Even if I wanted to sell it, I'd never get anywhere near the $8500 I've so far put into it. I plan on getting better cars in the future (still waiting for an '85 Testarossa to become afffordable), but this one's my first car, and It'll always have a permanent place in my garage.

I've spent too much of my life looking for my ''one'' car, and now that I got it, theres NO way I could let it go. I like it so much, I don't want to screw it up, so I'm easy with her, although I think I should have a little more fun with her. Its an IROC-Z, extremely rare, if anyone even crashed into me, you don't want to see what I would do. I'm always careful. I do hope later to get a nice 2002 Camaro SS. But that car will sit next to my IROC. I'm also thinking of getting an old Camaro like hmm 83-86 or so, and totally suping it up, and make it as illegal as possible, nice weekend race warrior type car. So in the end, my IROC is a stepping stone, but its one stepping stone that I will be carrying with me.

I'm in this for life. I'm only 17 (18 on the 26th), had my car since i was 15, fell in love with it when i was little, and plan to keep it for life. My engine died on the 3rd of this month, easy thing to do was buy another one, but no, I'm a big spender (make about $100 a week at FoodTown) so I'm looking for a 350 to swap in and finally make the car exactly how i want it. Even though money's short I plan to keep my car forever and do whatever I need to to keep it driving.

Sorta both. As much $$ as I've sunk into it i'm gonna keep it until I'm out of school, when I will hopefully be able to find a lower milage Z28 or TA. 3rd or 4th gen will all depend on what I find and pricing, not to mention what kinda job I land after I'm outa school.
