Etching primer

Im gonna do the primer an etching primer om my car myself. I was wondering for the etching primer(the stuff that seals the bare metal from outside elimants)how find I should sand down to? Some people say all te ayto 320 and others say keep it rough. What is any of you professionals opinion?

320 should be fine
