Social Distancing Car Cruises...

So being in Iowa, we haven't had any lockdown yet (although a ton of businesses are closed until this virus crap passes). Anyways, a lot of towns in my area have been doing **** THE DRAG events to give people something fun to do, while practicing social distancing at the same time. They have also used the events to collect food items for local food pantries. It's actually been really cool, and main streets around here have been PACKED with cars cruising on Friday and Saturday nights. We used to cruise the main drags back in high school (25 years ago) so this has been a little trip down memory lane. I've had my pic show up on Facebook pages of radio stations, event organizers, etc. Here's a few pics that I've found of myself lol.

Is there anything like this going on anywhere else??

You can tell that people have been unwinding a little after being cooped up for a while. There have been burnouts going on all over the place at these events.... You can actually see a haze of tire smoke in the air almost everywhere you look lol

I had forgotten what streets with lots of cars driving on them look like.

Re: Social Distancing Car Cruises...

Cool. Yea, we do something similar. Where I live there is a cruise in every Saturday from April-October along with tons of car shows throughout the year. KY is locked down, so all of that is cancelled for now. Someone started organizing these "stay in the car cruises" on Facebook. I don't have Facebook, but a buddy of mine who does lets me know about them. I've done a few of them. Everyone just meets up in a lot somewhere and never gets out of the cars. We sort of line up and then leave and cruise the strip for several laps, then go home. Every once in awhile, some folks will pull a patrol car move and park door to door 6 feet away and chat.lol I kind of enjoy it really as I haven't cruised the strip since 2003.

In spite of the lockdown, I've taken all 3 of my cars on county road cruises every once in a while to stave off cabin fever. It's actually quite nice as there is a whole lot less traffic than usual which makes the rides more enjoyable.

Re: Social Distancing Car Cruises...

Your car looks great in those pics.

I haven't heard of anything like that here. I'm out driving a lot, just to drive. But I do that all the time anyway, virus or not. I take my GTA out typically twice a week, and drive my other car a lot too. After 6:00 p.m., it's pretty deserted.

I've always liked driving for the sake of driving. It can be any car really. You know how when you first got your license, your Mom would send you to the store a mile away for a loaf of bread, and when you got back you put fifty miles on the odometer? Forty years after getting my license, I still do that.

Thank you for the compliment!

And as for your last paragraph, I am exactly like you

Re: Social Distancing Car Cruises...

Yeah, the big Cars and Coffee that was supposed to be starting this month is doing a cruise next month... They usually draw over 1000 cars so it should’ve interesting to see how a cruise like that goes.. They figured out a route up the coast that is friendly to lowered cars and exotic cars.. I might try it out if the weather’s good... I’m assuming our governor will still have the state shut down then even though May 4th we’re supposed to be able to re-open...

“May 10th Event Specifics: Due to the COVID-19 situation we will be altering the May 10th event of Seacoast Cars & Coffee from it's traditional format to a Food Drive and Cruise format to benefit the NH Food Bank

To be clear: this will be replacing the May 3rd event.
.
Here's how it will work:
-Follow coned area upon arrival
-Volunteers will collect your donations curbside, no contact
-All vehicles will park in JCPenney lot facing one direction and at least 6 feet apart (both cars should be able to open doors without touching)
-At 9:15 We will begin our Police escorted, 37 mile loop from Newington, to Hampton beach via 95, back up 1A through downtown Portsmouth and back to the Mall at which point you may return (if Mall is open) or everyone may disperse, whatever you are comfortable with.
-We will be posting a printable window stick for you to print at home and display in your window during the cruise
-Please bring your own coffee as we will not be distributing coffee to the group for obvious reasons
-We will also be posting the specific route for everyone to download. This route does not have any speedbumps or rough roads which would pose a problem for any of our lower cars so don't worry.

Follow here for more updates as we move forward and thank you for following Seacoast Cars & Coffee!”
