Clearcoat Over New Decals

Anyone ever tried putting clear coat over a new decal? The original painted, red-orange, "PONTIAC" on the rear of my 91 TA burned away in the sun after about 10 years. I replaced it with a gold decal that shows in my avatar on the tail light lens. I have replaced it about every 5 or 6 years after that and every one I put on begins to peel by about 4-5 years. Its starting to peel again now. I am thinking about clear coating the entire lens after installing the next decal and sealing the decal with the clear coat. Anyone do this and what was your result?

The 91 & 92 light lenses are unique and expensive to replace,so I do not want to ruin them but I am tired of continuing to replace the decals every few years. What's your thinking?

Nope, don't do it. The clear needs something to adhere to....and a nice, smooth new decal isn't something clear wants to stick to

Like Darin said...NO! Decals are cheap and easy to replace

Re: Clearcoat Over New Decals

Thanks for the advice. By what you say, I suspect I would be trying to remove the CC after a few years.

Re: Clearcoat Over New Decals

Have a reverse decal made and use it as a paint stencil. Paint/airbrush the lettering on then clear over that.

Re: Clearcoat Over New Decals

I think I will stick with the decal with no decal approach. Once every 5 years or so isn't that much trouble. Besides maybe someone will figure out how to fix the interior delamination problem by then! Thank you for your suggestions. I do like your idea, TTOP350, I'll probably do that if no one continues to make the replacement decals.
