sprayed aircraft stuff on iroc rims and....

been reading info on how to restore iroc rims and got REAL lucky. got some spray on aircraft stripper at walmart and since my wheels looked so bad decided to spray some in and inconspiicuous spot and drove home. pulled up and got out and DAMN!!!!!!! the spot was was sparkling. tried more on one half of an entire wheel and S.O.B. !!! totally perfect. got a theory on that stuff{aircraft stripper} i think that since i'd been driving all afternoon the wheels were warm and spraying the klean strip on at that particular time helped. it seems that the old clear just bubbles right off if the strip is applied when wheels are warm. just alittle sumthin sumthin for you fellas to consider.

Just remember by removing the clearcoat you're wheels won't have that protective barrier, so keep them cleaned. I still have to do the front ones.

Unless you feel like polishing your rims EVERY week, I suggest putting clear coat on them. I didnt put clearcoat on my 2 front GTA rims, and now theyre trashed. I have to resand them totally and start from scratch.

I don't know about your theory, but that stuff works like magic. I haven't driven my car for a week. I put some of that stuff on my wheels, after taking it off the car first. It worked great.

I painted my calipers too. I used it on the back caliper prior to painting and the caliper turned out super clean and black, the color of the metal, not the color of the dirt and grime. The calipers are now "Chevrolet Orange-Red" from WalMart..........Sweet!!!

Pics soon.(I have to get the film developed.)

Later,
Jesse

I wouldn't put that stuff on your wheels then go drive around. It'll sling all over the side of the car.

Exactly, ever had tire shine do that, at least that's paint friendly.

FYI...not all tire shine is paint friendly...put it on, then wipe off any excess.

My Dad told be a body shop story of some painters helper that was trying to strip the paint from a fender. He was probably using stronger stuff then air craft but it started dripping on the tire. I guess he didnt think it was to harmfull. Before you know it that damn tire bubbled up and EXPLODED. No joke, that guy wasnt to bright.

>BTW I did the same to my rims and it keeps them nice and clean. I used that Klean strip and man does that **** suck. I took me two cans to get it all off. A good tip is to spray if off with a high pressure water hose. Now I used a car wash and had to spend the extra money to spray it off the ground and over by the fence. (cheaper then a law suit if that gets on anyone elses car)

Where do you get the aircraft stripper stuff and what does it cost? Also, what kind of clear coat would you recomend putting on afterwards?

WALMART!!! $3.97 + tax. It's in a big blue can.

The clear I got was from Walmart too, but I haven't sprayed it yet, so I don't know how good it is.

so your wheels get all shiny like Marks without polishing or anything? just spray the stripper and clearcoat? sounds too easy for such good results.

mark did polish his wheels. If you just spray on the stripper, they will definately be shiny, probably not as good as mark's. but if you polish them, they will look even better. your choice.

Spraying that stuff on didn't make mine shiney. I had to sand and that's when it started getting better. If it were that easy I wouldn't have gone over the back ones 2x.

mine were so bad that without anything else done to the wheels, you could tell they were much shinier.

I am working on the sanding and polishing, but that is taking longer than I projected. I also have the rally wheels, not IROCs, so I have to sand off a LOT of aluminum cast.

Don't you have to keep on putting polish on them when you are done to keep them looking good since you take off the stock clear, and isn't it the same with the plenum??

from what I read, if you spray a clear coat over it, you don't need to polish it anymore. I haven't tried it yet because I have not been able to finish one wheel yet because of the lack of time school gives me. Mark might know for sure.

I've been reading, spraying clear on them defeats the purpose. Also it could turn yellow. And no you don't keep polishing them as that may dull and scratch the shine. Just keep using windex (ammonia free) and they'll be good to go. I'm going to try the carnuba wax thing for protection.

Nope those EPA laws took car of that. Well I'm talking about the stuff they used in body shops 10 years ago. They made it Illegal because to many people were being stupid and touching the stuff. I herd if you let it sit on the sidewalk I would eat a small dent. NO its acid! The new stuff might not do anything except make a brown spot in your tire.

>3 bucks? I payed 6 for some clean strip and its weak. Took me 2 cans. For some reason I can find it here in Texas

As JimIroc85 said, be VERY VERY careful with that stuff...

I used it on my 88 Formula wheels, and yes it works well. so well that if you don't get it all off and some flys on the quarter panel, be ready to see primer or bare metal.

It eats what ever it touches, and will turn your tires different colors also.

Best practice is to take the wheels off the car, let it sit and scrape it off. If you must do it on the car use the brush on and do thin coats. masking your car wouldn't hurt either.

I also had them polished by someone with the tools to do so when they where done... results where not bad at all..
