when i turn my key it only goes as far as the run position and if i sit and mess around with the key it will eventually move to the start position then it comes right back and everything seems fine, what would cause this? have heard too many different things just looking for someone who this may have happened to

thanks for any help.

solution

Go to a locksmith...they may be able to fix it cheaper than a mechanic. If he refers you to a mechanic then you will pay 120 for parts and labor...the mechanic told me that it was cake.

This is what happened to me:
I was having problems, then one day i could not turn my car OFF...the key was stuck in the on position. So I neede to unplug the distributor to turn off the engine, then unhook the battery to turn off the fan....big PITA

It sounds like something is binding either w/in the ignition cylinder or w/in the ignition switch itself. I would try fiddling with the ignition switch...its under the dash on the top of the steering column. Remove it, or back it away from the rod that goes up to the ignition cylider, then try moving the key through various positions (disconnect the battery b/f doing this). If everything seems okay, then put in a new ignition switch--easy, costs arond $45 I think. Otherwise if you're still having problems, then your ignition cylinder is probably messed up and needs to be replaced.
