Sloooowwww power windows

Are the power windows supposed to go up and down really slow?
I dont know anyone with a thirdgen around here so mine is the only reference I have. both windows work fine -they just go up and down really slow.

How slow is very slow? Any way you could time them, with an actual stop watch (or clock), in seconds, from going all the way down to all the way up? Do it for each window. I'm curious, too.. maybe I'll time mine as well. I know my windows are slow, but not super-slow... and I had thought of ways to speed 'em up a while ago. I considered making a voltage doubler to give the window motors "twice" what they were expecting. But then I wondered how much faster it would burn the motors out- and replacing those motors is a first class pain in the butt, so I abandoned the idea.

I also have a 93 ford t-bird with power windows and they are three times faster than my formulas. Taking a wild guess, I' say that the windows take anywhere from 10 to 15 seconds to go up or down. same speed either way. my t-birds will go up in like 3-5 seconds.

Your window motors are probably either (1) dying or (2) pushing up a less-than-smooth track and about to start dying. This happened in the same way on my last GM car with power windows and now it is happening on my Formula's driver's side window. Is it worse in colder weather? Take the trim off the inside of the door and see if you can lube the track (clean/remove any obvious obstacles if need be, then spray in some white lithium) to fix the problem. If the motors are still crabby, you'll have to either fix em (Vader had a post about this a while ago) or replace em - hopefully before one dies while the window is stuck down on a cold snowy day.

Personally, I have vowed not to do this particular job on my own ever again, since I almost lost my hand in the spring-loaded scissors-like contraption supporting the window from beneath...

Well, I suppose a quick shot of lithium grease wouldnt hurt. Ill have to watch out for them snowy days too- they can really sneak up on us down here in TEXAS...he..he. Thanks for the reply...and Ill watch out for the scissor-like hand remover if I ever have to get inside the door.

Sorry to say but your power window motor is probalby going. My car was like that. My passenger side window was all slow and then later on my window would only go up and down every now and then. then all of a suddenly it dont even work period. Its summer time...my a/c leaked out all the freon...and my passenger window wont go down...ITS HELL I TELL YOU!!! haha oh well imma fix it next paycheck

yeah, its prolly the internal circuit breaker going.......time to replace your motors.

first time i did mine, it took me 4 hours

now it takes me a 1/2 hour to crank them out at work

good thing my A/C works.....So, is there any cutting involved to get the motors changed? or is it pretty straight forward?

If I remember correctly, you have to drill out the rivets that are holding the stock motor in place. Replace them with either thicker rivets or bolts/nuts/washers.


...btw, I just got my 1st locked thread ("Aren't we as bad..." in B & I)! I feel like it's some sort of milestone. rst-topguy, I wasn't trying to start any flame wars bro (and ppl were being civil), just an observation...

Before you plan to change out the motors and all that, definitely lube up all the working parts and see what happens. Mine did the same thing so I put some white grease and WD-40 on them and everything's fine now. That was a year and a half ago and they're still fine.

Greasing is the first thing to do.If this doesn't work it could also be loose/dirty electrical connections.If you can get or borrow one put a voltmeter on the connectors and check you have 12V,any less will certainly cause slow operation.This pretty much applies to any electrical item.

Umm I think it could be a very simple problem, the power window button my be old and beat up. Go to the local dearlership and buy a buttons for $13.50 each and that may jus tsolve the problem. See my passanger window was going up slow till it was starting to mess up. So I swaped buttons with the driver one adn it went up faster. Its just a thought and a quick fix and it worked for me.

The passenger window in my 89 RS has been slow since I bought the car in 1992, about 170,000 miles ago. It's still slow, it still works.

Pop that door panel and grease the window tracks. Make sure the plastic guide wheels appear to be moving properly. It could last over 170K miles like mine, or die tomorrow. Guess it all depends on what you wanna do. I have a spare motor in the shed just in case.
