Installing hatch rear cover, HELP
I am installing a hatch rear cover in my car "the black cloth that covers the rear so knowone can see what you have back there." I need to know how to put the 2 button things that hold the in place so It doesn't move around, I heard there is a metal bracket that hold it but my car doesn't have those, has anyone ever figured out a way to do it, please help!

I dont know if anyone has succesfully done it yet. But I installed one into my car a month ago. I got the brackets from a 88 bird and the rear cargo pieces. Then looked where they were located in the bird and then welded the brackets into my car. I have no problems with it since except for the fact that I dont have the deck lid trim piece that was made for the shade and third spoiler brake light.

I have the deck trim lid piece already installed also, I have the cover in the car also lol, its just when I try to open the hatch it moves and I have to re adjust it, the buttons are not installed yet, could I cut holes in the plastic in the shape of the squares at the end of the cover thing and put it in that way? it looks like it would work.

I think I have heard of others doing it but i'm not to sure about that though. Try doing a search on it cause I remember posting on a topic where someone did that.

I cut those brackets out of a car at a Pick-a-Part and pop-riveted them into my 88 Iroc. Some have just mounted it to the plastic trim panels only, but I wouldn't trust it. Lon

I was re reading the post and remembered that the shade has a spring that pushes it up aganist the sides of the plastic panels, so it should work without the brackets. I remember mine was hard to push the end in to get the sucker into the mounts on the rear panels.

Thanks for the idea, but I don't really want to rivet anything lol.
The cover is very stiff at the ends when you have to push it in to fit, the roller part is not stiff and smoothly opens and closes, it does not pull hard so I think cutting the square holes in the plasitc will do the trick, well see if anyone else has any idea.

You DO have the plastic caps that mount into the trim pieces don't you? At LEAST get those pieces from the dealer or a PAP and mount it to the trim piece correctly. Your choice if you install the brackets or not. I will tell youit was PITA to get it lined up correctly (because it is hidden behind the trim panel) to drill & rivet in place. Look on the backside of the trim panels and you'll see the impression of the round hole you need to cut out for the plastic end caps. Lon

In all honesty,it would be best to get the brackets and put them in. The panel is sandwiched between the bracket and the black plastic mount that holds the cover in place and provides support when the hatch is raised. I pop riveted the brackets in mine with no troubles. I believe you can get everything in a kit less the cover from Classic Industries. That's where I got mine.
